I’m in Santa Fe and nearly finished with a 1980 full restoration, heavily modified, xs 650. I would probably do the same with that one. Hate to see these go to waste.

1980 xs650 complete rebuild, split cases, many new parts. Engine is finished but it have not been started year because I'll doing a complete rewire. The pistons move. I'm thinking clutch assembly, which I'll look into tomorrow. Will also try what Johndaddy mentioned in his last sentence.

Some Yamahas are reversed where what you are looking for is on the tank instead of the frame. I think I found a cheap 850 tank on eBay and cut them off that. They were the same size as the xs650, although $29.00 sounds like a cheap solution to me.

Thank you 5 twins. When the assembly seats properly should the assembly gear be flush with the gear it mates to in the case. Mine is slightly offset.
