Getting the ‘57 beetle back on the road in 2024

In the world of my Toyota Supra, a very common mod is to shim the factory oil pump to address low oil pressure at idle and lower rpm’s. Perhaps a different oil pressure control design?

Getting the ‘57 beetle back on the road in 2024

Thanks John. I hope to have my short list of adjustments completed by the end of this week. I’m chasing better idle oil pressure. I tested the pressure switch and the manual says it should switch the dash light on at 4.3 - 8.5 psi. I tested my switch and it turns the light on at 13.5 psi. I...

Second rear side panel installed. Made these washers so the seat back frame wouldn’t cut the side panel vinyl. Mechanical adjustment day tomorrow. And I also need to give the windows and painted surfaces a good wipe down.

Getting the ‘57 beetle back on the road in 2024

This particular kit won’t work on my car with the stock wheels ☹️. My bolt pattern is a 5x205, but my Canuck distributor sells this: I’ll ask around our local groups to see if anyone has tried this set up. Interesting it’s sold with a single master cylinder and no proportioning valve.

Yes I’ll have investigate that further. I suppose a major step would be front discs. There’s a good chance the drum surfaces could have surface rust from a couple of years of storage. Maybe I should pull a drum and see.

Getting the ‘57 beetle back on the road in 2024

My objective was to get it running decently on put it on the road. I don’t have a plan to improve the cosmetics.. After my short list is completed, hopefully I can drive it for the summer. It is in bad need of door seals. If I find myself looking for a project I may tackle that before the end...

Getting the ‘57 beetle back on the road in 2024

Yes there’s quite a few things to adjust and check. I’m sure I can get some good advice at the car shows. I need to do some work on the XS so that’s coming up soon as well as yard work…. Busy time of the year but keeps me from sleeping all day. lol. I’m hoping the flickering oil pressure light...

Getting the ‘57 beetle back on the road in 2024

Well this is a historic day. The beetle moved on its own for the first time in over 52 years! But not without issues that will need further attention. - Drove 5 miles! Mostly at 30 mph but once got frisky and ran it up to just shy of 50. - Speedo didn’t work at first but came to life in 2...

The rear licence plate mount was a pita to address. The po had bent the plate over the deck lid and literally drilled 4 x 1/4” holes in the lid to bolt on the plate. I made a bracket out of aluminum and made a bracket today. Not pretty but it works. The car’s name is “Henrietta”. This is the...

Passenger door panel done. Sound deadening added. See inside of bottom of door - very clean for a 69 year old car! Fixed up and installed the beat up running board. Fender protector is a piece of trailer mudflap.

Convertible is desirable but I don’t think ‘73 is a sought after year? Could be wrong. That selling price was quite low.

Getting the ‘57 beetle back on the road in 2024

Quick oil pressure test and looks like I’m good to go. Idle and over 2500 rpm. Oil was warm, not hot. From what I’ve read, min hot spec over 2500 rpm is 28 psi with idle 4-7 psi. I’ve got a pesky oil leak from either the oil pump or filter screen assembly. I’ll look into it later. Right now...

Getting the ‘57 beetle back on the road in 2024

There’s factory sound deadening material attached to the doors and body panels. Quite a few pieces have fallen off and rather than attempt to reattach them I bought this rubberized material to stick to the empty spots. Appears to work well and makes the door sound more solid when you close it...
