lol copy that. hey, at least I can still blame previous owner for now!

    Overheating or stator?

Had a chance to look at the wires to see if the chain had affected them at all. The wire seem well protected and securely far from the path of the chain. Here's some photos.

Copy that. I'll check white wires and chain.

    Overheating or stator?

Here's photos of the regulator rectifier. Looks to me like it is OEM.

    Ah, good catch on OL.

    Overheating or stator?

I read resistance between each pair of white wires. I read 0 ohms, 0hms, and .7 ohms. Since I read one bad voltage earlier I'm guessing one coil is bad so it messes up two of the three pairs, then the .7 ohm reading is the two good coils making one good pair. Anyways, those are the reading and...

    Overheating or stator?

Thanks for the reply. It is near midnight and dark here. I'll put things back together, test the resistance of the stator windings on those white wires, take photos, and post again in the morning.

Wanted - Seeking replacement stator 80-84

I follow advice by other helpful members in this thread https://www.xs650.com/threads/overheating-or-stator.70030/page-2#post-915465 Seems my stator is bad. One of three coils reads lower voltage. People in the thread said buying from MikeXS may cause more problems than it is worth. Anyone...

    Overheating or stator?

I see the great images explaining the differences between 70-79 and 80-84 stators. Step 1 Fresh store-bought battery. Step 2 Does not pass slap test. Does not exhibit any magnetism. Step 3 Shorted green wire to ground (see photo) Battery read ~12.8V relatively steady when running Battery...

    Overheating or stator?

Here's a better photo of the carbon brushes. I see the guide mention "the green wire at the regulator plug." Is my finger pointing to the correct wire and plug here?

    Overheating or stator?

Photos! I measured 5.7 ohms across the copper rings of the roto.

Here's me looking at the stator this evening. I can take more photos tomorrow morning.

    Overheating or stator?

Jim, thanks for your clear instructions with the slap test. I appear to have no magnetism. Continuing following instructions. Will report back.

    Overheating or stator?

OK thanks for cluing me in overheating is likely not the issue. I just got home after letting it sit for another 45 minutes and grabbing food. I'm measuring the voltage while it's running now and it is only 12.8V. I'll go through the troubleshooting linked by everyone. thanks!

    Overheating or stator?

I was just able to ride 1.5 miles closer home. I'm at an O'Reilly's now which is nice. The bike shut off while idling for a minute behind a car at a red light. the battery currently reads 12.94V. Still suspecting overheating.

    Overheating or stator?

I'm out riding around my first bike after buying and getting her running. I've done repairs to the clutch. Things are running fine. I rode for about twenty minutes today beside the lake in Seattle in 74 degree weather. Eventually the bike shut off while I was running. My battery didn't have...

Sanity check: bent washer in clutch. previous owner says this was intentional

I'll compromise and fix the washer so it is oriented correctly and then bend a different section of the washer to lock the bolt. Bending this back flat feels good to me but I would not trust continuing bending it back so it folds completely the other way now.

Sanity check: bent washer in clutch. previous owner says this was intentional

Ah! I see exactly what you're saying. OK I'll pop it open and make sure that bit is in that locking key hole and bend the washer back. Thanks!
