    Electric issues.....again

I would check in with the shop and ask what 'rewiring the whole bike' actually means and why they decided to do it. Did they replace every single wire? Did they replace the fuse box? Did they make sure it's charging properly? I would check the fuses first (if the Specials have one, I'm not sure)...

Smoke and idle struggles runs fine once warm

Yes those BS38s have seen better days, which is why I ended up getting the VM34s. I can run an extra fuel line instead of blocking the inlet off, that's easy. I also have a spare throttle cable for them so I'll do that 5twins. Unfortunately that was me using yamabond on the choke gasket... I...

Smoke and idle struggles runs fine once warm

Yes I did - the rectifier had gone bad, seems to be charging fine with a new one and no blown fuses anymore. Yeah, I've checked and cleaned the floats on the VM34'S but there's no visual evidence of anything in there. The muffler isn't stock, don't know about exhaust, they both came with the...

Smoke and idle struggles runs fine once warm

For sure - let me know if you see anything. It's idling at 1300rpm with the screw all the way out. If I push the stop it holds idling at 900 but will only get that low if I push it. The hanging idle is most noticable when I blip the throttle to change gears, it sticks quite a bit. But its...

Smoke and idle struggles runs fine once warm

Ok, so it's definitely a fuel problem. I left the bike for 2 a bit over weeks with no fuel and last night it started up easy well with no smoke. After leaving it overnight (fuel off) with carbs attached, it smokes and the right cylinder is struggling to hold idle without choke. I'm talking to...

Smoke and idle struggles runs fine once warm

Haha thank you, circles is right. It wasn't so easy to start this morning, took a few kicks, but ran great once it warmed a little although it was still smoking on startup until warm. I'm still convinced it's fuel, but I guess I can try leaving it for a while with the carbs off or fuel line...

Smoke and idle struggles runs fine once warm

Timing was a little off but everything else was fine. It wasn't starting so I checked the spark plugs — who knows why but the right spark plug had no gap at all... Anyway, after I fixed that started right up, with no smoke and sounding perfect. The plugs were a bit wet when I pulled them, and...

Smoke and idle struggles runs fine once warm

Yes I have an inline filter that goes to a T then into each carb. I've just cleaned the carbs, I didn't find any debris. Cleaned the needle and seat (pin is very easy to remove with a automatic punch). The float level did seem on the high side, maybe slightly above 24mm so I took both sides...

Smoke and idle struggles runs fine once warm

Hi everyone, I really appreciate this forum. I've been through a lot with this XS, but then life got in the way and it was left to sit for a few months... It was running quite well before that except for this problem, which is apparently still a problem (sometimes I wish letting things sit...

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Penrite 20w50 mineral oil Not notchy, there’s no sound and I can’t feel anything pop out, which is why I thought it was clutch slipping. Others have said worn dogs can start that way. I’ll checks those springs! I’ll also check that shift cam bolt isn’t bent

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Update: I can adjust the clutch so it won't hit the cover and still work properly. Only thing is it's still slipping in first gear and worse than before... It isn't changing gear, but maybe it's transmission-related and not clutch-related. Or maybe it's to do with the cush springs? When I...

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

I used this kit, it's probably the same as from Mikes XS. I used a Dremel to file down the nut and bolt slightly. It didn't need much, the nut is already very thin, so you want to take off as little as possible. I used red Locktite, messed up the threads with a hammer and punch, then used a...

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

There's a lot of great stuff in this thread, although no fix really, it just ends up working. My clutch measures the same as in the thread, with what looks like a similar amount of basket wobble, protrusion of the hub and distance between the needle bearing and spacer shaft. It also looks like...

Great idea - I’ll do that before ordering a different clutch

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Also, just to check this isn’t something wrong - is it normal to have side to side free play in the shaft? (Side to side if you’re looking at the engine top down) Pre-tightening the clutch hub nut. After that there is no free play of course.

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Yes, I did, and since it barely worked, I'll try a different clutch and see how that goes. I think you're right. I'll update here in a few weeks!

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Yes I replaced the cable a year or so ago, I will add some lubricant and check for binding, good idea. Perch handle is ok, it’s an aftermarket one from GeoffsXS without the mirror mount. A question - does this line on the basket need to align with anything? I noticed the alto plates have...

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

Thanks guys! Yeah it’s doing it with 7 plates while it definitely isn’t hitting the cover so don’t think it’s the pressure against the cover causing it to stall. Yes small end is in the worm gear. I had a one piece pushrod in there when it was working but thought I would swap in a two piece. I...

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

I’ve just tried adjusting it while running but it either stalls or hits the cover. Weird thing is, it’ll stall and lurch forward when running but when engine off I can push it forward with the clutch in easily. I’ve just gone back to the stock 7 plates and it’s doing the same thing haha… I can...

Alto 8 plate clutch hitting cover

If that could be confirmed, that would be great. If I remove the 2mm washer from behind the hub, the hub scrapes against the basket. I don’t think there is any other way to increase the length of the shaft unless you removed the 1mm or 2mm washers behind the basket which wouldn’t work either...
