    '70 or '71 XS-1B?

She's a beauty. And welcome to the forum. The VIN # matches to an XS-1B. Beyond that.... hard to say. If you still have the white vinyl ID sticker on the neck, it'll have the year and month of manufacture. Other than that, I'm not aware of any way to tell.

Here's a pic of the engine I put together for my bike. You can't see the case stampings, but you can clearly see the painted color on the top half vs the unpainted lower.... jus' like yours.

    XS850 Special Under Seat hook

#5 is the tank damper. #7 is a "special washer." My guess is the special washer is actually the tab the seat slots into.

Lived a fair bit of my youth in Al and Fla. Dothan, Ft Walton Beach mainly. The thought of stopping roadside and grabbing a brown paper bag of still hot boiled peanuts makes my mouth water. Love 'em.

I pretty much agree with that... the dementia too. I've also got a family member with it. Anyway... If it were me, I'd show up with a new battery and roll the dice. It's possible your Dad or someone else drained the tank and carbs before it went into storage. A new battery and it might just...
