    So git 'er Done

I'm not sure it would be much of a "build" but I'm happy to oblige with some more photos @Adamc . I'm keen to continue with my XS650's development. It's running but very scruffy. It's got lots of scope. But at the minute I'm space and garage challenged.

    So git 'er Done

Definitely steel. Definitely some rust. I already had the vinegar and I've never done it before. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/315111279008

    So git 'er Done

Took the tank off and half filled it with vinegar. It's sat overnight and with a torch I can already see a tide line. Before doing this I washed it out with the garden hose and emptied it into one of those under the bed plastic storage containers. Some gritty bits. Some paint flakes. But nothing...

    So git 'er Done

Apparently, lead acid batteries can no longer be sent through the post in the UK. My son is an electrician and he came up with a 7 amp hour fire alarm battery. But it had spade end connectors. Superglued two bolt ends to the case and attached the battery leads and a battery tender lead to that...

    So git 'er Done

I thought I'd post in this thread cos I'm a bone-idle prevaricator and @MaxPete will tell me to git this one done, too. The weather in the UK is bloody windy, wet and freezing cold (at least where I am). But it will be sunny before I know it and then maybe some more castle tours...

    So git 'er Done

Yeah, I hate that exhaust system. But I've seen a few on the internet with this and it fits really well. I think it came from the factory like that. I've looked at loads of photos and youtube videos and no two seem the same. I've not heard it run so I hope I don't annoy the neighbours.

    So git 'er Done

I've not heard it run yet. I bought it last year and it's been in the garage since, hidden under lots of other stuff. We moved house back to the North East (North Shields, Tyne and Wear) and the house is smaller and the garage is too. Garages in the UK are much smaller, in any case. I've just...

What have you done to your XS today?

This is a known phenomenon. So, you're not going mad or seeing things. I'm not sure why this happens (I'll ask my brother. He's a physicist.) I concur with the consensus forming and the evidence (one of the plugs is bad.) There are lots of fake plugs around.

Can't get the oil strainer plate off

I think it might have been me. Also, I used a bit of copper pipe flattened and shaped to a chisel edge to use as a scraper. Steel is harder than aluminium and copper is softer. Worked for me. The lever/pry point is here ... Merry Christmas all ... by the way.

    Lost valve nut

Ah, yes. America and England, two countries divided by a common language.

    Happy Birthday @Mailman!

Happy Birthday @Mailman. Hope you had a great day. I'm 66 too. Stinks don't it? Still, during this cost-of-living crisis we should remember - people still think it's worth the price. Dave

So sorry to hear the sad news about Griz1. My condolences to his family and to all here who knew him. Dave

    Thanks @gggGary

    Too advanced?

Don't hold it there. Set the points roughly and hook up a bulb or a multimeter so that you can see when the points open. (Thats when the ignition fires - but you knew that :)). Use a well-fitting ring on the end of the crank and turn the crank repeatedly past the 5 degree point. Move the points...

    Too advanced?

Ive seen the video on Facebook. @Dom I couldn't see your video very well on my phone. I always mark the timing mark with snopake (whiteout). But now, on my PC, it looks OK. At tickover maybe just a tad advanced. As has been said here, the timing is set at 5 degrees and the mechanical advance...

What makes the Isle of Man such a dangerous / often deadly race?

Wow, @Adamc You should have that framed. I've only got a write up and caution for driving too slowly in Flagstaff. I was in a Winnebago. Dave

What makes the Isle of Man such a dangerous / often deadly race?

More than 300 people have died climbing Everest. Perhaps we should ban this too? Then we can move inexorably to a world where we all live forever.
