    Wiring harness musings

I think your statement clearly confused electron flow with current flow although I will not assume you do not know the difference. However, your post was quite accurate in regard to Perhaps it was intentional, perhaps not but my statements stand in juxtaposition as they are clear despite the...

    Wiring harness musings

I think you are confusing current and electrons; they are two different things. I'll try and add some clarity; Electrons flow from negative to positive, but current flows from positive to negative. Electrons adhere to a fundamental principle of physics, and current adheres to an almost...

    Wiring harness musings

Thanks for the welcome back :). I do recall a discussion about the glowing LED on but having no first hand knowledge of the XS electical could only offer a "makes sense". You schematic makes it more clear. Adding the flyback diode to a mechanical relay coil is standard practice, adding the...

    Wiring harness musings

I don't disagree with much of what you are saying, except that your conclusion that the negative side of the battery is the lowest potential on a bike or anything with a changing system for that matter. If the battery is providing current then yes it is lowest. However, if the battery is...

Grounds So Important: A Single Point Grounding (SPG) Approach

The name is thegsresources dot com. Changed some time back. There must be a block on pictures hosted by that site that are referenced outside of the site. This is now hosted at photobucket.

Maybe you need to be a member. It is just a link to the figure and works for me. Anybody Else not able to see it?

Grounds So Important: A Single Point Grounding (SPG) Approach

R/R is Rectifier Regulator generally used in the context of PMA. For a field controlled alternator the rectifier may be part of the alternator proper with an external regulator (mechanical or electrical).

Grounds So Important: A Single Point Grounding (SPG) Approach

At Pamcopete's suggestion for a better description of electricity; I added this picture. http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=31555&d=1338673670

    some wiring diagrams

I just started a new thread summarizing the Single Point Ground approach to grounding. I have been converting most of the members over at GSR to this approach. http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?p=419692#post419692

Grounds So Important: A Single Point Grounding (SPG) Approach

There have been some recent interest in things electrical, and in fact some threads on a somewhat mysterious subject known as Grounding. Actually the broader subject is Power and Grounding, the study and art of how to distribute electrical power within your bikes electrical system and then get...

    some wiring diagrams

Pamcopete might come along and suggest that your battery to R/R connection is not correct. However you have it the way it was designed from the factory and many other motorcycles are the same way. Splitting the circuits is a good things as well provided you keep the fuse box in good condition...

Solid State Power Box for XS650

So if you cut the current in my plot is 1/2 it is right in line with your numbers. Your probably right, I'm not familiar with 2 cylinders per se.

Solid State Power Box for XS650

The GS has a pickup on the crank It is total ignition draw as already mentioned, two coils and ignitor. Did you want the firing line as well? I'll assure you it is a fat blue spark to fire off the 130 odd horse of the 1166cc engine. My bike easily charges at 14V at 2500 RPM. The setpoint is 14.25V.

Solid State Power Box for XS650

Yes it does manage power by trimming any load that exceed the 10 amp circuit limit. Full operation is immediately restored as soon as the load (i.e. short is removed). It does NOT manage power battery power with a user programmable shutdown process like your laptop. Your whole notion is...

Solid State Power Box for XS650

This is a plot from a clamp on current probe measuring the current draw for an GS electronic ignition and a pair of 3.0 Ohm Accel yellow coils. They measured at 3.3 ohms cold. This is a 4 cylinder wasted spark engine so it is firing 2 times per revolution. The same as a 2 Cylinder. The scale is...

Solid State Power Box for XS650

People normally use a voltmeter to tell when the charging system is dying. These are small waterproof meters that are very accurate for $5. They are also earthquake proof (see the add)...

Solid State Power Box for XS650

The 40W rated Cyclops 3800 only pulls 2.2Amps@14.5V on High beam , so figure a 20W LED headlamp is about 1/2/ The biggest LED 1156 bulbs I have found are 0.5Amps@14.5 (40 5050 emitters) but the 27 5050 and 18 505 are about 330 mA/280 mAmp respectively and are close to the same. In summary, with...

Solid State Power Box for XS650

At 11A unless there were some smaller lighting loads (e.g. headlamp), the battery is going to get shortchanged and never really charge. With LED's all around the field controlled alternator is probably just fine assuming a solid state reg and maintenance is kept up on it.
