Thanks. All original wiring. Making all the wiring shorter doesn't look easy or fun.

    79 Special refurb complete

A few vintages ago I bought this bike from a guy in Montana. I lived in Seattle at the time and his sister lived nearby and was getting married soon so he brought it to me. "Ran when I parked it." So I parked it in my garage for awhile. Finally, I flushed the tank, cleaned the carbs, put new...

    Ignition coil bracket

I got a coil mounting bracket from Mike's. to mount a coil like this The coil mounting arms fit the coil perfectly. I thought the other side of the bracket would fit in the original coil mounting holes but they are not far enough apart. There is no note on Mike's product page about where...

    Rear shock preload adjustment

The tool only needs to catch the hole to spin the body and adjust the preload. The tool ggg showed is correct. In a pinch a pair of Channel locks with a rag in the jaws will do. Sometimes it is easier with the bike on the centerstand to take any load off.

75 sump pan removal. TOTAL NIGHTMARE!

My neighbor suggested a pry bar with a small block of wood and a bottle jack. Put the pry bar in the drain hole and use the wood as a fulcrum and the bottle jack to lever it up. Sounded dicey but you do what you have to. I still like heat.

75 sump pan removal. TOTAL NIGHTMARE!

I used an aged 2x4 and a small sledge hammer. I put the wood on the leading edge of the sump plate between the two forward mounting bolts. I really had to smack it hard! The bike was up on a Handy Lift so I wasn't on the ground. Still an awkward operation. Part of the old gasket was left on the...

75 sump pan removal. TOTAL NIGHTMARE!

I feel your pain. I just replaced the sump filter on a 79 Special. I am sure it had not been off before. I put the bike on the centerstand, then strapped the back down against the rear tire to raise the front even more. I ran a long tie-down strap from the handlebars to my overhead door-opener...

What have you done to your XS today?

Lurker Phil, now in Spokane. Oil and filters change on the 79 Special. Not even a 24" Crescent would break the front drain plug loose. Why do people do that? The sump filter was in shreds and the other one wasn't much better. No gasket behind that filter and only one of the drain plugs had a...

    Standard Rear Rack pics

I think I better keep this one. I have one for my wife's Special, also. I used to be closer in Seattle. We like it over here.

    Standard Rear Rack pics

This fits on my 78 Standard with the lift handle. I recall it was a snug fit. The turn signals have to come off before installation. Looks like the one nj1639 posted minus the vertical piece.
