Assume nothing, as assumption is the mother of all f**k ups, when I get a pressure plate I will do a more detailed write up, this post was written in Loo.

XS650 Clutch Pushrod experiment & tidbits

Last one I done was in 2018, so no pictures were taken, I may at some stage buy an old pressure plate and do an illustrated true up.

XS650 Clutch Pushrod experiment & tidbits

To true up, plate was set up in my lathe using the spring seats in the outer face as the correct position, this showed that the friction face was running around 0.5mm off true, I then skimmed this face and smoothed it off using a straight edge, whilst apart i made a new tulip shaped part of the...

XS650 Clutch Pushrod experiment & tidbits

May have written this before, the rod and archimedes works across a multitude of different bikes of all brands, so that tells me the rod and ball method is not the problem, as with all old bikes put a new cable on to start with, but on both of mine the problem was a lack of quality control with...

    Somewhat scared and apprehensive

Before you go anywhere, you say white smoke, white smoke is water vapor, and if it is just that your bike needs a good run and heat through, if your smoke is blue it's oil and could be rings, stem seals or head gasket, if black smoke it is un-burnt fuel, best to truly establish what sort of...

    Clutch Rebuild/Adjustment Question

Good idea to replace needle bearing with the modern one which has many more needle rollers in it, also make sure the index marks on the basket and pressure plate ar in line on re-assembly, i had this on my present 650 and no amount of adjustment and fiddling would remedy it, so i took the...

    Frame protection during engine installation

Sadly when my motor had to come back out, ( valve stick, toasted head) i only took off what i could get away with, and though i took all precautions to get the motor back in i still ended up with a couple of scratches. if it comes out again i will make a trolley lift specifically to do the job.

    She just won't start anymore

With the ignition switch on and the on/off switch on check you are getting voltage at the coils, if not the problem the problem is between battery and coils via the switches, if you have voltage it will be between points and coils.

    I'm Throwing in the towel...

Just break down into complete parts/units not component, advertise on here and Craig's list, I know you will want good prices, but price them to sell or you could be sitting on them, hope this is helpful and actually answers what you asked.

    I'm Throwing in the towel...

i had a similar thing happen 3 weeks ago 2 bent valves and a stuffed guide, was going to sell it, had a beer or two, then i looked at a bike importer breakers on ebay and got a really good complete head even the valve tops had no wear, no doubt the bike would have come to the UK from the USA, so...

Valve bounce, maybe? stuffed two valves!

All retainers and collects were still in position, all stems and guides in spec, only other evidence was a substantial witness mark on the inlet valve

Valve bounce, maybe? stuffed two valves!

Back up and running today, put the motor in yesterday, this morning i was at it before 6am, every thing back on except seat tank panels and battery before 8.30, then off to work until 1pm, quick bit of lunch, then put on original side oil filter, tank and battery, few kicks to get some oil...

    Cleaning spark plugs....

Always used the blow torch method, my dad was a army mechanic that done the same thing, it works and cleans them up like nothing else.

Valve bounce, maybe? stuffed two valves!

Back to the thread and head, i checked the stainless valves in the stuffed head all within spec no oversize stems even the one that bent, so this head will go on the back burner, replacement head stripped cleaned threads chased, de-coked, what little there was, tappet cover stud repaired, valves...

Valve bounce, maybe? stuffed two valves!

I certainly will not bad mouth builders, suppliers or products that have been around for years on the strength that a part sometimes fails, I have known some of the so called best in the world fail with far more dire consequences, as it is it can be remedied and will be back.

Valve bounce, maybe? stuffed two valves!

Sadly I did not build the motor, I have already sourced a used head which came today, and I must say i am happy with it as there is no wear on the valve tips, seats and valves are good with no pitting so will be lapped in, guides are in spec, only thing is a 6mm tappet cover stud is stripped...
