Replacing engine seals / part one, the shifter seal

Nice write up Mailman with excellent pics. Reviving this thread because I had to replace this seal the other day that was leaking like a s.o.b. And of course the chain slings that oil all over the place... It's easy to do from left side only with the cheapo spring puller i got somewhere long...

    Boardtracker-ish build

In case anyone wonders what the inside of a brand new Emgo reverse cone muffler looks like after just 20 miles- behold. Jesus. I wrapped the cores with aluminum screen which is wired on, then ordinary pink fiberglass insulation carefully applied. They're still louder than I'd hoped at about a...

    Boardtracker-ish build

Related to tuning of course is this is old school- with points at .014", a new mechanical advance unit with good springs, irridium plugs, and a Harley/Andrews knock off Chinese dual output coil, which was only 20 bucks on eBay... will see if that holds up. Not 100% confident... It's being fed...

    Boardtracker-ish build

Jetting is surprisingly identical to 34mm VM's. Slides 2.5, float tabs set dead flat, 6F9 needles on 2nd clip, 159-P6 needle jets, 190 mains, #25 pilots, air/idle screws out 1-1/2 turns, no air correction jets. Very smooth power delivery and pulls hard through the entire range. Will report...

    Boardtracker-ish build

Put the first 5 test miles on it today. Not registered yet. This is the last of my 4 XS650 builds- or more accurately TX's all with early motors. They all ran great but this is the fastest of the lot. 36mm VM's into a ported head and performance exhaust. Can provide jetting if anyone is...

    Crankcase venting

Noted. From what i can find these valves are just spring loaded plungers. I'm pretty surprised if they're holding up to millions of cycles over time. They'd ordinarily see orders of magnitude less as brake parts.

    Crankcase venting

Well, this is a subject I'd never given much thought to- I just assumed Yamaha engineers knew what they were doing when venting to outside air on the early motors, and getting some chain lube in the process. They do mist a significant amount of oil. These brake check valves must be rubber...

    Boardtracker-ish build

Not sure where the gray cable originated... they were NOS that was in a huge batch of bikes/parts bought 5 years ago. Also, kudos halfmile on your current monoshock build. Very clean.

I just realized I can't make money building bikes.

This is a topic i know a lot about. 15 years and about 20 cafe style builds of various makes, primarily 70's vintage. Already had a fully equipped shop. 1) Scan craigslist for deals. Never pay over 400 bucks for a project bike. It must be Titled. They are never running so you must know how to...

    Boardtracker-ish build

FWIW, i spoke a bit soon on the Mikes pipes being mandrel bends... they aren't. Not a big deal, just didn't study them closely enough with all the chrome... The Emgo shorty reverse cones have a baffle plate that restricts flow spot welded in about 6" from the outlet end. Needless to say they...

    Boardtracker-ish build

Made the intakes. They taper from 36mm to 34 and kick out 4 degrees for optimum clearance for the 36mm VMs . The 1 1/2" pipes from Mikes are nice. Good fitment, nice chrome, one piece mandrel bends. Probably going to put Emgo short reverse cone mufflers on it which should put it in the 6/10...

    Rotor puller stripped

Personally not a big fan of BFHing the crankshaft... lotta shock into bearings and cases in the direction they are not designed for. A rap or two as last resort perhaps. No we've not heard from OP. I assumed he meant he stripped the puller bolt relative to its outer housing rather than just...

    Rotor puller stripped

Ok, so don't believe me about my custom strap wrench........ it doesn't slip, with a cheater bar over the handle if need be. The only way the OP is going to free that puller from the rotor is to completely immobilize the rotor. You want to put all that pipe wrench torque through to the back...

    Rotor puller stripped

Since the outer puller section is now apparently jammed onto the rotor itself, you may need to make a tool like this- a modified beefed up oil filter wrench that exactly fits the perimeter of the rotor. Then use a large pipe wrench with good sharp teeth on the cylindrical part of the puller...

    Boardtracker-ish build

Thanks. Lotta work to do on the tank yet which will really complete the Gulf look. Motor back in frame. 18T sprocket installed and chainline is all good. As expected had to grind away a bit of the rear hub bosses that were interfering with the chain seating properly on the minimum size 40T...

    Boardtracker-ish build

Bars installed. Very snug but retains a bit of vibration damping. Will be lopping an inch or so off each end with final control setup. Had to make some custom riser spacers to keep bars from hitting tank during U turns. Plus the look mimics the high rise fork tubes to drop the front end. I...

    Boardtracker-ish build

Been sidetracked with other stuff and also making some refinements to the Hodaka tank XS build... Did finish the various custom brake parts required. Made a stay rod, and master cylinder mount for the rear brake that interfaces with a length of bar stock welded to an OEM brake lever. That...

    Wanted - 2 into 1 exhaust header

Thanks for the pics. Apparently the collector is not welded on to these headers? That's a surprise. Aesthetically i guess I'm not a fan of the way they crossed over the pipes either truth be told. I'm leaning toward 2-2 pipes at present but you can pm me a price to 13743 anyway. Shipping is...
