Bike runs great, then 1 cylinder dies, then great again? SOLVED

I think I will have my gas tank painted "Invisble Idiot", I deserve that. XSLeo, I was actually thinking of using a single hose and connecting both barbs together last night, good to know this thought isn't too weird ;)

Bike runs great, then 1 cylinder dies, then great again? SOLVED

Update - Solved The carb barb rubber cap was messed up on the right carb only. When the bike would get hot it would really start to seep air. It wasn't something obvious upon visual inspection. The air cap I use on the left carb is homemade, a piece of hose with a plug in it. The ones that come...

Running rich before pods. Running rich after pods. Why?

I am currently experiencing a similar situation. I went from pipes with a smaller diameter to larger pipes with a free flowing exhaust. Although my carbs are not the same as yours, the symptoms are. It was acting rich, but I first mistook this as lean, because I thought there was no way it would...

Bike runs great, then 1 cylinder dies, then great again? SOLVED

Update- I have replaced my fuel delivery system as to make absolutely sure there is not a fuel delivery issue. I have 5/16 diameter all the way from the fuel valve to the carbs. Fuel Valve (petcock) is a Pingel hi-flow. This runs into a Pingel hi-flow filter, a 1into 2, and onto the carbs.

Bike runs great, then 1 cylinder dies, then great again? SOLVED

Hi retiredgentleman, I spoke with you about this some time ago. I ended up getting a Shindengen FH020AA, made in Japan. The original thread on this is good because it exposes the differences between the real ones and the ebay clones. Mine has been working awesome, I also have a digital led volt...

Bike runs great, then 1 cylinder dies, then great again? SOLVED

I've been saying that I don't think it's the spark. Thanks for the reassuring. As a testimony to the PAMCO, I run my bike really hard, Like to its limits. Hard enough that I burnt up a stock Reg/Rec (the one that came in the PMA kit) in 3 days. But like I said, the timing is still spot on :)

Bike runs great, then 1 cylinder dies, then great again? SOLVED

I am no longer using the stock TCI. My TCI went bad a couple years ago. I am using a PAMCO and a PMA. I have recently checked the timing, and it is spot on at idle, and at higher rpm's. But, I'm not entirely sure there isn't some electrical problem with the PAMCO that is messing up under load...

Bike runs great, then 1 cylinder dies, then great again? SOLVED

I re-did all the fuel plumbing, as well as replacing the petcock with a high flow Pingel (it was something on my list to do anyway) I took the bike out, and while it was running good I turned off the gas, the bike started to die out soon after, and I turned the gas back on while still riding at...

Bike runs great, then 1 cylinder dies, then great again? SOLVED

I may need to reiterate that the problems I am experiencing are with the VM34 carbs. Some of the tips I am getting are for the BS34/38 carbs. The info is useful but I just don't want there to be any extra confusion. Tonight I removed the VM34 carbs and put on my BS34 carbs. The BS34 carbs were...

Bike runs great, then 1 cylinder dies, then great again? SOLVED

I have done some trouble shooting. It is not the spark plugs, and it is not the fuel. Would a change in weather make that much of a tuning difference? I raised and lowered the needle clip, and it made a difference, but didn;t seem to stop it from dying out, or wanting to die out at 1/4 throttle...

Bike runs great, then 1 cylinder dies, then great again? SOLVED

So, its not the spark plugs. I am consistently able to recreate the problem. It happens about 5 minutes into the ride, usually on straightaway while cruising. I removed both carbs and checked them out, everything looks normal. Put them back on, problem still there. I figured something out...

Bike runs great, then 1 cylinder dies, then great again? SOLVED

I was trying to rule out a bad plug by switching them, but It did that weird thing where it decided not to break properly the next time :-) I have an older pair of plugs that I know are working, I will try them out. Also, the kink in the fuel hose is a good theory, because maybe when the bike is...

Bike runs great, then 1 cylinder dies, then great again? SOLVED

This is a strange problem. I have a 1981 xs650 with VM34 carbs, PMA, and PAMCO. The other night I was riding home from a fireworks show when one of my cylinders started to sputter, and eventually died. I pulled into an empty parking lot with a street light so I could check it out. I realized...

    Electrical Issues

One thing to consider, if you pressed the rear brake pedal and the brightness did not go up, your rear brake switch may be set incorrectly, its behind/below your right foot when sitting on the bike. If its too tight the brake light stays on full time.

Just stranded. Voltage Regulator Rectifier Smoking :-(

Correct. So far the PMA has been working well. If my new PMA stator does fail prematurely I have a feeling that I may go back to the stock rotor and brush setup, which I removed very carefully and have kept in a safe place. At that point I would probably try to build my own Reg/Rec.

Just stranded. Voltage Regulator Rectifier Smoking :-(

I wanted a Reg/Rec that would work on an 81 with a PAMCO and PMA after my new one fried after 2 days. I was willing and ready to build my own, but the DIY Reg/Rec plans were all for the stock charging system. I asked how to build one for a bike with PAMCO and PMA and got no reply, so I did...

That is an inferior clone (from what I have read). The genuine Shindengen FH020AA made in Japan has a solid metal back plate while the clone has only the black potting material.

Just stranded. Voltage Regulator Rectifier Smoking :-(

Josh from Tc Bros. refunded my money for the bad Reg/Rec, Thank you Josh. I did quite a bit of research and made a decision to get my new Reg/Reg from Jack Fleming at Roadstercycle.com It arrived today and I took a photo to show anyone who may be interested the difference between the new one and...

Just stranded. Voltage Regulator Rectifier Smoking :-(

I have a modern blade type fuse box. All of my wires are still in very good shape. Upon inspection it seems obvious that the Reg/Rec was the culprit. It basically cracked open in the back and just bled out.
