Bike runs great, then 1 cylinder dies, then great again? SOLVED

This is a strange problem. I have a 1981 xs650 with VM34 carbs, PMA, and PAMCO. The other night I was riding home from a fireworks show when one of my cylinders started to sputter, and eventually died. I pulled into an empty parking lot with a street light so I could check it out. I realized...

Just stranded. Voltage Regulator Rectifier Smoking :-(

Recently installed a PAMCO with E-Advance and a TC Bros PMA. THe PMA kit came with a regulator rectifier. Initial test riding went really well, rode it most of the day yesterday, bike was running great. Today I was about 5 minutes into my ride, had just accelerated to about 60mph (rather...

VM34 carbs - Symtom that moves with carb body only

I have an 81 XS650 Special 2 with VM34 carbs, PAMCO with E-Advance and PMA. Bike runs good. The issue started when I got the VM34's and has been around before I got the PMA or the PAMCO, so its not related to those items. At idle the right cylinder fires steady and strong like a metronome...

    PAMCO + E Advance + VM 34 Idle/timing question. (SOLVED)

I recently installed a PAMCO with the E Advancer into my 1981 XS650 sp2. Bike still has the stock rotor. I've had the VM 34 carbs though for some time, and know the ins and outs of those pretty well. My question is this, after installing the PAMCO, the bike started and idled extremely well with...

How long does it take to get a Pamco?

Maybe i'm over anxious, but it has been more than a week since I ordered my Pamco, and I don't think it has shipped out yet (my email was not answered) I'm afraid to send another email cause I don't want to bother the guy, especially if he's super busy making my Pamco ;-) Do they usually take...

VM34 Switching sides had crazy effect?

My bike has VM34 carbs. My bike runs pretty good at all rpm ranges, cruises on the highway at 70 just fine, 0-60 is really nice etc. Well, I am always trying to improve the performance. I noticed that the right cylinder fires almost like a metronome at idle, like Bup-Bup-Bup-Bup The left...

After rebuild woes - Metal Mice are in my engine

I have some figuring out to do, so I'm starting this post to help keep track. Story - My cam chain guide was making noise. Other than that my bike was running good. Compression wasn't the best, but also wasn't too bad, maybe around 130-140 While I had the engine out I also replaced the cam chain...

Can anyone make out what is stamped on this piston?

I have the bike back together, and only have this photo of the piston before I cleaned it up. Wondering what the markings say. Thanks.

Engine sound after rebuild (with video)

I just put my engine back together after replacing the timing chain and piston rings. I also put on new gaskets, cleaned things up a bit. So, I'm wondering if this is what the engine is supposed to sound like? I realize I probably have never really listened to it turning over with the pipes off...

Does this spring end go into this space?

I have the right side cover off. Looking inside at the very bottom, I notice what looks like the end of a spring. This spring end has the exact same shape as an empty space sitting right next to it. Is it supposed to go into that space? photo attached.

    Cam chain question

My new cam chain is a D.I.D 219FTS(s) 106L The chain came already together. Is this normal? The master link was sent in a separate bag. I removed 1 link and replaced that with the master link. My chain appears to be 1 link short. I know the new chains are super tight, but I don't have the...

Childrens Bicycle as an engine stand

I made a really sturdy portable engine stand from an upside down childrens bicycle. Obviously bicycle forks are very sturdy, and everything on the bicycle is height adjustable and rotatable. I turned the handle bars around and laid them flat so it will not tip. The wooden box it sits on has 2...

Cam chain has no visible master link.

Cam chain guide is broken, the plastic has separated from the metal and is making some noise, so I have the engine apart. I've seen tutorials that when the pistons are at TDC, the cam chain master link is, or should be at the top of the cam gear. My chain does not seem to have any kind of link...

    Carb sync Negative Reading?

Some info first. Saturday I received a set of VM34 carbs. After some basic tweaking bike was idling ok. It seemed like it idled best with the mix screw all the way in, so I'm guessing I need a little bigger pilot jet. But, it still started, and idled pretty well. I took it out for a test drive...

Needle supposed to have this many washers?

My midrange has been hard to tune in, so I bought some Canadian needles, and needle jets. Upon removing the "stock" needle, I was a little surprised that there were 3 washers involved. 1 above the clip, and 2 below. Is this normal?

    DIY Speedo

My son and I were in the kitchen, looking at an empty tea can. We were like, "I wonder if you could make a speedo out of this?" :)
