    Mikuni VM34 Air Filters

I’m looking for readily available (I live in Toronto Ontario Canada) air filters for my VM34 carbs. I bought the kits from Hoos Racing a number of years ago and they included USA made 3”x4” pleated KN clone filters. The filters have been good until one got knocked off when I hit a pothole and...

    Boyer Blue Box Coil

The coil I received with my Boyer blue box kit has secondary resistance of 8.54k which is far greater than the specified 2.75k. The primary resistance is as per spec. What concerns should I have with this coil?

Boyer Bransden Micro Power Kit Wiring with an M-Unit

I have a Boyer Bransden Micro Power Kit on order and am exploring my wiring options. Boyer recommended "a 1 ohm/25 watt ballast resistor mounted on an aluminum plate and in series with the micro-coil feed to reduce coil heating when hot weather town idling". The bike has an M-unit which is...

Random stalling, trouble starting when warm

I can start my bike with one or two kicks with the choke on when cold. It stalls randomly during warm up and when idling at a stop and I have trouble starting it when warm. Today it stalled when warming up. It wouldn’t start again so I pulled a plug to see if there was spark. I used the push...

    Resistance plugs and non-resistance caps

I’m tuning my bike after a top end rebuild and want fresh plugs on hand. It’s time to replace my caps as well. Since the stock BP7ES plugs are getting harder to find/more expensive I’m looking at using BPR7ES plugs with are readily available/less expensive. I realize that I’ll need to change...

    Piston Circlips

The Circlips I received with my Cruzinimage piston kits have a bend in them. It made installing them easy. Should they be lest as is or bent into the grove?

    XS650 top end torque specs

Input wanted! In order to make my top end rebuild as fool proof as possible I’ve created a list of torque specs using the parts diagrams and lists as a basis. I obtained the numbers from manuals and this site. I didn’t bother with the head nuts and bolts specs. Arrows point to components on...

    Oil Pump Bolts

I managed to break a bolt for my oil pump and stretched out another one using my new torque wrench. Better that than stripping the threads. I can find zinc coated Phillip head and stainless steel button head Allen bolts locally. Which is my best option?

Base Gasket. To seal or not to seal.

I’ve looked at a lot of threads but can’t determine a consensus so am putting this out to vote. I am using a Vesrah gasket. A couple of bonus questions: 1. Is Permatex Moto Seal (see link below) a good product if a seal is needed? 2. Is this a good product to use between the head and head...

Cleaning piston, valves and combustion chambers

How aggressive can I get with cleaning pistons, valves and combustion chambers? Carbon was 2 - 3 millimetres thick! I used paint stripper, Gunk and the end of a hacksaw blade to remove most of it. What should I use to finish up?

    Motor Gasket Set Recommendations

I’m tearing down and rebuilding my 1980 Xs650 motor top end this winter. I’m looking for recommendations for a gasket set. I can get an Athena set easily enough but I understand the head gasket may be too thick. I’m hoping to order from a Canadian source to avoid shipping and duty costs.

    Valve Lapping Compound

I’m preparing for a top end rebuild this winter and am looking for valve lapping compound. I’ve read a number of threads on the matter and it seems that using a course grit followed by a fine grit is the way to go. The problem is I can’t find both. Powerbuilt has a package with both but I can’t...

Front foot pegs - looking for replacement suggestions

I’m looking for new foot pegs for my 1980 Special. The rubbers I got from XS650direct 3 years ago have all but disintegrated. Are there any other suppliers that provide better replacement rubber or any pegs from other bikes that would fit my bike?

Ignition system with adjustable advance settings

I've spend hours searching for a thread that mentioned an ignition system that had manual switches to adjust the advance settings. Looks kind of like a Boyer blue box but has micro switches on the side. Can't find the thread. Please post a link to the thread if you are aware of it.
