    Fuel Petcock Screws

The OEM washers are a special hybrid type that as Wingedwheel mentioned, are almost and interference fit on the bolt. I don't think copper would be soft enough to provide enough sealing (even after annealing). Last time I purchased the Yamaha ones, they were a couple bucks cdn each, but were...

    Standard vs Special Headlight Brackets

Has anyone successfully swapped out special headlight brackets for standard units and retained the special pilot box and gauge mounts? The standard brackets look as though they may slightly change the location of the headlight. Contemplating the swap to convert the special over to standard kit.

    Fuel Petcock Screws

Don't forget to include the sealing washers for the bolts or you are going to have a leak. I've found the ones from Yamaha work best and can be ordered directly from your local dealership. The aftermarket sealing washers I've used have been junk and were prone to disintegrating on install...

    Van Islander's TX650A - Quest for a Daily Rider

Late to the party, but you can still get these from your local yamaha dealership. Just don’t ask what I paid for them ;), cause it was a lot more than in the links above.

Is it my turn? Anything to do with lathes, mills and other shop tools

Its hard to tell from the first photo, but the square portion (at the head) was turned down to an interference fit. I couldn't find stainless metric cartridge bolts locally, so opted for commonly available 5/16" units. Once aligned, I tapped them home with a dead blow hammer and used a bit...

Is it my turn? Anything to do with lathes, mills and other shop tools

Had a try at turning down some stainless carriage bolts on the the mini lathe today. Was trying to mimic the the look of the original rivets that held together the foot rest assemblies. Its a much improved look over the socket head cap screws that I had installed previously.

    Memory Lane

Glass fuses tend to be more prone to breaking and are also becoming harder to find. I was also concerned about seat clearance and relocated on the battery box under the right side cover (see below). If you are careful and keep the wires long when cutting out the old fuse box, there should be...

    Memory Lane

This is the best blade fuse box I have come across: https://www.cycleterminal.com/mp280-fuse-box.html It was recommended by a member here and I installed one on my special last year. Its affordable, compact, and weather resistant. You will need to have ratcheting crimper per to install.

    XS750 or XS850 Speedometer?

Yes, this is true, but the odometer reading will be logged in miles not Kms.

    XS750 or XS850 Speedometer?

That is great info. Thank you. I was debating going with an electric aftermarket unit. Looks almost stock and would probably be more accurate than a 40+ year old NOS unit.

    XS750 or XS850 Speedometer?

My speedo packed it in on the last ride of season this past fall. I am looking at options to replace (ie. aftermarket, OEM, or NOS) and was wondering if a XS750 or XS850 unit would work. I am a bit limited on choice, as being in Canada my Speedo in KPH and the majority available are in MPH.

Handle bar grips - glue or no glue

Hairspray works really well. Wouldn't have thought so until I tried it.

Wanted - WTB 1979 Speedometer in KPH

My speedo gave up the ghost on the last ride of the year. Looking for a decent condition speedo for a 1979 Special II in KPH (I am in Canada).

    Petcock and fuel line routing

I have VM34s w/ uni pods /dual mikesxs petcocks and found that using clear inline filters help keep the fuel lines in place where you want them. I use a straight filter on the left carb and a 90 degree filter on right. The right carb can a little bit tricky to route because the fuel inlet is...

    DIASATER!

Motormike, Glad you are ok. I’ve seen pictures floating around of a mechanic who did something similar, but wasn’t as lucky (the ring shaped burn on his finger looked like crispy bacon). I’ve gone to a silicone unit as my original wedding ring was getting uncomfortable after 10+ years of...

    So I wasn’t crazy after all…

On a related matter, I was planning on coating the spoke threads with anti-seize to prevent galling. Do I need to also apply at the hub where the are seated to prevent and galvanic corrosion between the stainless and aluminum?
