Blank slate... yet another XS Project.

I brought this home ta-day. A fellow North of here had this for sale and I just could not resist. Initial numbers tells me that it is a '77D model but I'll verify when I read the engine number. Not really certain what I will do with it yet, I'll sit in the garage and do some serious looking...

    Motorcycle specific clutch friendly oil...?

See how I tried to disguise an oil thread...? No, huh...? In that the XS650F (and all of these Yamahas I guess) share engine and tranny oil, does the choice in oil need to be compatible with wet clutches...? Any preferred...? I happen to be nearly complete Triumph T140V 750 and have the...

Of Parts Manuals and Oil Filters...

I have owned this XS650F for three years and finally took said XS for a pretty decent blast today, Hey, I've been busy...! lol Runs great, pulls nicely, brakes are good. During the ride it stalled at a stop and was difficult to restart, quite unlike the way it has been for some time. To be...

Fuel taps, vacuum rebuild kits or swap to non vacuum...?

While getting the '79 XS Standard ready for Spring riding I needed to change a clutch cable which had me pulling the tank off which in turn I discovered a leaky fuel tap. Two part questions here: Are the stock, vacuum type fuel taps worth the rebuild kits or are the non-vacuum type taps worth...

What happened to my clutch...? Update... :)

I registered the '79 XS 650 F this year, and took it for a decent shake down blast yesterday. I knew that the clutch ws in need of adjustment so I had a peek at the adjustment procedure in the T/M this morning... I loosened the lock nut and pushed in on the center adjuster (odd little set up)...

Hey all, Happy Thanksgiving... Is this too soon to replace...? o_O So I pulled the front caliper off the '79 650 to install a rebuild kit that I bought a year ago... can't rush these things ya know. lol It all came apart ok, the seals and retainer went on easily enough, but the piston...

Special tool for the clutch...? '78 XS650

A friend of mine recently bought a bunch of tools for both Yamaha and BMW from a now closed dealer here... If there is a specific tool to use when removing and replacing the clutch to get at the noisy / trashed electric starter gear, how would I identify said tool...? I have a fairly decent...

So which model XS do I have...?

Little confused here... I know, that's not hard to do. I want to buy a shop manual, looked at the Haynes manual and although they are ok, I have located an actual Yamaha Owner's Service Manual and I like to have as close to factory books as possible. The problem is that I do not know whether...

Hey, new guy here, well, I'm old but new here... :)

A couple of weeks ago I saved an XS 650 from the chopping block, kid you not. I am so excited, a '78 650 that runs friggin' great, nearly completely stock, needs a few things but hey, so do I.. lol Check out the broken tank badge, I can't any either but I'm in no hurry. What a sweet...
