    Air Screw

I found this to be useful for adjusting bs34 idle screws. Craftsman 41380. It will fit 1/4" ratchet but I've always used it on its own. Drop the bit down the hole and turn slowly until the blade falls into the screw slot. You can maintain downward pressure with a finger. A line across the top...

    Clutch push-rod seal

I've always thought of these leaks as "self-oiling chain" lol.

First post, purchased modified XS650 yesterday!

Welcome. Good lookin' bike. GPZ killer. Doubtful, but no doubt a hoot to ride. I could see painting front fender although the black makes the fender sort of "disappear ". Anyhow, this is the spot for all things XS and more . We love pics and stories. Have fun.

    BS38 O ring search

I would try Ace, or another hardware store that has a Serv-a-Lite section. Good chance they'll have your size and you can buy the quantity that you want. Someone may know where Mikuni specific O-rings can be found.

    Fuel recommendations

I've always run premium in al my vehicles and equipment, even in my poorest days. Just a habit. Surprised that a stock xs would ping on regular gas but if 5twins says so, I believe him. For me the issue is Ethanol. Ethanol Sucks.! It will screw up an engine in a number of ways and if left...

BS34 Carbs with open pipes ?

No personal experience with open pipes but if I recall, folks running open pipes/pod filters with bs34s usually jet up. 2 sizes on mains and one size up on the pilot. Not sure about torque inserts, short inserts of smaller diameter that fit inside the head pipes for a few inches at the head end...

Crank has difficulty turning after rebuild

Naw, don't do that. There would be precious few of us here is we gave up after a stupid mistake (or ten. Lol). Stick with it and ask questions when you need to. You'll find that there's not much you Can't accomplish.

    Air Screw

You can and probably should adjust it. They were set very lean and capped at the factory for emissions. If the caps have not been removed already, not too difficult to drill/pop them out. You will want to remove the screws plus spring washer and O-rings in order to clean this circuit. First...

    Disc brakes.

Others may weigh in, I'm just not sure how much is to be gained by adding a second disc. Especially a heavy old xs disc. It's your bike. Hopefully someone who has done this conversion will comment. Welcome to the forum.

This is what the Haynes manual shows for a flattened pipe.

    Backfiring and rich

Welcome. With black, sooty plugs and black smoke it's possible that small pieces of junk/debris from the tank and/or lines are occasionally lodging in the carburetors needle and seat assembly, preventing it from sealing properly. Basically flooding the carbs and engine with fuel and leading to...
