Are VM36’s to big to Run on a Stock engine? I’m sure its been asked. But any experience here?

I had to chop my steering lock to fit my springer front end. Has anyone done this? Just looking for ideas on how to fill it. I suppose i could just weld it up and finish it. Is this my only option? Frame is a 71
