    Looking for some insight

I agree...not sure what you're thinking, gggGary, but I'm thinking BS carbs for a low-budget approach and more steady-state throttle applications, Mikuni VM's for improved throttle response in a variable-throttle application (ie, road-race) and pumper FCR's for the ultimate in throttle response.

    700cc kit with a Shell #1 cam in a 78XS650E

Very interesting to me to see real-world objective data on this as I have essentially the same engine in a 650 SG that was built by the PO, except that it has Mikuni VM34's and 1.5" headpipes with Cone Engineering mufflers. As you say, quite different in behavior from a stocker. Thanks for posting!

'74 DT250 Bitsa. The "Aussie Mutt."

...and envious too! Although I'm in SW FL in largely agreeable weather, I'm away from my shop and all my shop projects. There is one and only one project for me this winter, the restoration of a Hurricane-Ian-wrecked house. Drywall, more drywall and then some more drywall, followed by mud and...

So true! Years ago I ran a 4-cyl paved oval track Sportsman BMW 2002. My wallet was very definitely the limiting factor, as I was running against guys spending stoopid money on cars / engines in a less-than-premier class. Handled as well as any other car, but didn't have the gear ratios and...

Just out of interest, how fast do you think a normally aspirated, no funny gas, un-streamlined Yamaha XS 650/750 go? I see that a Royal Enfield 650 went 132. Is it reasonable to expect the Yamaha to crank in similar speeds?

A nameless buddy rode a hotshot street-bike to a track-day session. He was turning hot-laps and thought he was turning respectable times. He let a buddy who was an amateur roadracer ride the bike (a Ducati). The buddy promptly carved many seconds off the owners best times. It's humbling, but...

There may be some truth to the expression "it ain't the gun, it's the gunner". It may be a scandalous thought, but maybe, just maybe, it could be an acceptable approach to do the development/build/pre/tune, do some runs yourself and then put a hired (volunteer) gun in the saddle for the ride for...

Yup, 210 kph / 130 mph on an XS will be moving right smartly along... betcha the tires are good for a bunch more too!

@halfmile, thanks for the reply. What you are saying makes sense; unless you are protecting the hammertone frame with 2K clear, I suspect that it would be vulnerable to damage if painted rather than powder-coated.

    Whats your weather right now?

Not moaning here in SW FL; currently a sunny 26*C, 19 kph breeze, but thunderstorms by 16:00 hrs. Cool start of the week with highs at 19*C and cloudy tomorrow.

Beautiful work as usual, Halfmile. Questions for you regarding your hammertone finish; is this paint or powder-coat? If paint, what brand? From a can or spray bomb? I was planning on shooting a complete frame with Rustoleum hammertone and was questioning durability. Any thoughts?

Master cylinder bore clean up, plastic reservoir removal?

I believe the master is cast aluminum, so the brass brush bristles are quite likely to be harder than the bore material. |If the bristles were very fine and the whole thing was well lubricated, it may be OK. I would proceed with caution. I have no experience with removal of the reservoir, so I...

Getting the ‘57 beetle back on the road in 2024

Looking good there, Bosco! If I may comment...constructively I hope. The rust removal /parts cleaning process is what's killing your timeline. The process of degrease/scrape/wire brush/ electrolysis/more wire brush/more electrolysis/Evaporust etc is far too lengthy. The solution is to simply...

Is it my turn? Anything to do with lathes, mills and other shop tools

Yes, of course, I recall seeing the rotisserie but had somewhat forgotten about it. I hadn't seen the development of a headtube fixture, either, so I assumed it was a painting fixture only. Very nicely executed, Jim

Is it my turn? Anything to do with lathes, mills and other shop tools

Same as my Logan 820. A mid-40's machine, I believe. Tons of support for it. Owned it for several years before restoring it, as a real need (for a small business) drove the restoration.

Hats off to you Jim! Love these significant projects. Have too many myself! Do you have the Chop Source frame jig or are you building your own?
