BACON is on the market! She gets the looks from all the boys, but her time to move on has come. I've had a good amount of work done over the last two years and I have added little kms. New ignition and alternator retiming...

idles fine but dying under power

Hi, I am not actually pressing the battery box itself. Its just a metal section of the frame, same affect when I was pushing with my finger from the side. I've look into that section and I can't imagine how such a subtle depression could cause the power to be cut off.

idles fine but dying under power

Ok this is where it gets weird. I have gone over a lot of the wiring. That all appears to be intact. Solenoid is working fine. While working on it tonight I noticed that it wasn't any actual wire/connection that was killing the power, but actually pressing down onto the meal under the...

idles fine but dying under power

I did some more digging, pushing wires around in a few different places are making a connection that turns the lights on. I look at all of the fuse connections but they didn't appear to be making the connection. Ultimately, it appears to be one of the wires connecting to this box. Not sure what...

idles fine but dying under power

Alright! Progress! I had heard a clicking noise (solenoid) when I first started poking around in this area on the day it broke down, but the noise was also happening with the lose ignition. So once I fixed that, I was hoping I had found the only problem. No such luck...

idles fine but dying under power

I can't get the revs up to see if it can get to around 14. It could be the rotor, but I have my suspicions about another connection that might be vibrating while running. I'll run the test on the rotor so that I can eliminate that first. Cheers!

idles fine but dying under power

Your rotor is gone? Sorry, not sure what you mean by that. I just charged the battery. 13 volts when off 12.2 volts while running so thats not good news. I haven't measured it at the coils before...I'm not 100% on where they are, under the tank? Cheers!

idles fine but dying under power

Hi guys, My bike broke down recently due to what I thought was just an issue with the main switch assembly. That has been fixed. (http://www.xs650.com/threads/need-a-new-1979-yamaha-main-switch-assembly.60615/) Now I am seeing the power cutting out when I apply the throttle. It starts fine...

    Ignition Switch overhaul

Hello, I have taken my assembly apart, but for some reason when put back together, the key won't rotate all the way. Would you be able to tell me if I have the plate in the correct place? Cheers

need a new 1979 Yamaha MAIN SWITCH ASSEMBLY

I tried it in this position but that didnt work, and because at least in my mind, if the plate was rotated with these teeth aligned, how could it rotate? If anyone could help out with the alignment for 5.jpg, that would be amazing. Cheers

need a new 1979 Yamaha MAIN SWITCH ASSEMBLY

Hello, So, the missing screw was the cause of the loss of connection. However, while putting it back together a section (1.jpg) popped out, now once put together, the key won't rotate as before. (the power will connect if you rotate the key in the opposite direction, but its not put together...

Here are photos of what it is mounted to. The bolts are tight, its just the main cylinder that is loose so I'll remove it and see if I can secure it again,

need a new 1979 Yamaha MAIN SWITCH ASSEMBLY

Hey, I'll upload a better photo. It is mounted to a pretty thick plate, lots pretty legit... I'll take it off when I get the proper tool and see if I can solder it. Much better idea than replacing it.

need a new 1979 Yamaha MAIN SWITCH ASSEMBLY

Hello, My switch has been flopping around for a while, but now it is affecting ignition and general running. If I turn the bike on, the lights start, but the ignition switches button (on handlebar) won't have any effect until I lift the switch assembly upwards. Once it has started, I can...
