    Recommendations for better brakes.

An update from OP: I had originally built my bike "pipes-and-pods" with no mufflers. I added the shorty mufflers for the sake of my neighbors (and to be a little more original), which is why I had to micky-mouse the rear brake pivot. In the end I removed the mufflers and it gave me plenty of...

    Recommendations for better brakes.

These are great ideas. I initially built my chopper "pipes and pods" but decided to add emgo shorty mufflers so the predictable swivel doesn't work. I added an extension which is flexing badly. If I reinforce it I should be fine. Gonna head to the garage tomorrow.

    Recommendations for better brakes.

My swivel is completely bogus. It flexes and plays. I definitely need to fabricate something better. But i figured while i was at it i could consider an upgrade. Maybe i'll just get the swivel sorted and be good to go.

    Recommendations for better brakes.

Hey folks, didn't want to start a new thread to ask a (possibly stupid) question, but would there be any increase in braking power if I run a master cylinder on my rear drum brake? I'm currently running forward controls on a custom swivel and rear braking power is a joke. Most people seem to do...

What is happening mechanically when an xs backfires through carbs?

Thanks, i started hunting for TDC, holding the choke and it starts right up!

What is happening mechanically when an xs backfires through carbs?

It used to start on the first kick when stone cold, then third kick when warm. Now vice-versa, which is ok.

What is happening mechanically when an xs backfires through carbs?

Ok cool, yeah I found a sweet spot where it's more or less over the F (mind has an F and also the full advance marking) and now it doesn't backfire. It doesn't start as readily as it did when it was too advanced, but it runs better. I have a very cheap timing light, that was likely part of tie...

What is happening mechanically when an xs backfires through carbs?

Could it backfire through the carbs if it's too retarded? I feel like I'm just tinkering and fussing, maybe my timing light isn't great but the mark isn't dead-on on F in it blips around about a quarter inch and I can't tell what the best position is. Is it better to err in one direction or the...

What is happening mechanically when an xs backfires through carbs?

I know that backfiring through the carbs is generally a result of a lean condition. I've been troubleshooting mine for a year, which I think could be related to my needles because that's the point in the throttle where it backfires. Especially when cold. I'm running pipes and pods, pamco, just...

Triple screw tappet cover gasket in a pinch?

Valve job was easy, don't know why it seemed intimidating. Valves were both closed at least one integer too far. As for the o rings, we shall see.

Triple screw tappet cover gasket in a pinch?

Yes indeed has o-rings! Not sure why previous owner used rtv. Could be shot, i will have to check. Maybe he didn't know where to find the great o-ring, seal thread!

The XSs of Glory Daze, Pittsburgh

Whoops, one of those is my buddy's harley. And one is my XS! I still have dreams about Boogie Shoogie.

I couldn't post this in "bikes and babes" because it's hardcore pornography. Not least of all because of how bad the camera work is.

Triple screw tappet cover gasket in a pinch?

CONFESSION: I have never checked my valve clearance. It's one of the last items of routine maintenance that i've neglected all these years and that day has come. There is plenty of info on the job so it should be easy. I popped the covers and so far so good. But I noticed PO used red rtv on the...

Audio recording of XS doesn't reveal what I expected

I know it's not rephased! I just wasn't sure why I saw what I saw given my flawed understanding of the 360 paralell twin operation.

Audio recording of XS doesn't reveal what I expected

I intentionally cropped the lower clip to make it clear where the pattern begins. I didn't change the timing at all. Yes, i think what I see is what I should see. I didn't realize that "360° paralell twin" means they don't fire at the *exact* same time, and I didn't take into account all 4...

Haha my brain figured it out right when you posted. Yeah now it makes sense!

Audio recording of XS doesn't reveal what I expected

I gave it another look and now I realize the piston has one stroke for ignition and then another for exhaust, right? So it's like "left fire, right fire, left exhaust, right exhaust?"

Audio recording of XS doesn't reveal what I expected

I felt like I understood the mechanism but now i'm confused. Are you able to explain it in relation to the image i posted? I think I need to understand it musically.

Audio recording of XS doesn't reveal what I expected

So I make industrial techno music using motorcycle samples. I've been meaning to post them and will soon. I use different bikes and have used the XS in the past, but I was excited to finally make some quality recordings of my 1980 xs650 with shorty mufflers. I don't believe it has been re-phased...
