    Float Height for Mike's/Aftermarket Floats

@jpdevol - Just to follow up on this - I ordered a pair of the floats you suggested and it was immediately apparent they were closer to the originals than my Mike's versions. I set the float height to the normal 24mm and now all is well. REALLY appreciate the tip! This was starting to get a...

    Float Height for Mike's/Aftermarket Floats

You say these are for "late-model BS38" but I have a '71 so I'm not sure if what I have is the same as what you're working on. Is the float the same across all BS38? Edit: I checked parts fiche and both a '71 and '79 call for Yamaha Part# 256-14985-00-00. It would seem they're the same.

    Float Height for Mike's/Aftermarket Floats

I recently rebuilt the BS38's on my '71 XS650. I sourced a couple of kits as well as 2 new floats from Mike's. The jets and gaskets went in easy and seem to be doing their job. The floats on the other hand have been giving me some grief. Both were bent and one leaked right out of the box...

    Rescuing Dad's '71 XS1B

Thanks for setting me straight on those valve clearances. I don't know how I got that mixed up. They were actually pretty close with the exception of one of the intake valves which was at 0.007". @gggGary - I never thought of rounding the edges like that. I will have to try that out! I got...

    Rescuing Dad's '71 XS1B

Well I did as everyone suggested and took care of the high spots whilst leaving the other scuffs alone. I slapped on the new gasket, dry, and torqued to 7ft lbs. No leaks so far! Whew! In other news, I'm getting a rather pronounced ticking from the left side of the engine, up near the head. The...

    Gauge Options for '71?

Even with that wider criteria I'm not finding much out there. Late-70's and onward are easy to find in comparison. Is it possible to convert to a later gauge setup? Other than the angled outdrive I'm not sure what's actually different between the two periods.

    Gauge Options for '71?

I'm in the process of getting a '71 ready to spend some time on the road after a long hiatus. My biggest unknown right now is what to do about the gauges. Both the speedometer and tach are doing the wild sweeps. I took the tach off for inspection and can hear something relatively large clunking...

    Rescuing Dad's '71 XS1B

My first step was to make sure it ran smoothly so I knew just how much of a project I had in front of me. Both carbs needed a rebuild but after that it fired right up. I set them up per the guide here (a godsend by the way) and it purrs like a kitten. This bike lived in the front of my...

    Rescuing Dad's '71 XS1B

That's exactly what I ended up doing. Acetone soak, then scrape - over and over again for hours and hours. I put the sump cover in my ultrasonic (which will strip paint under the right circumstances) and the gasket didn't even blink. I've had stubborn gaskets but the ones on this bike are on a...

    Rescuing Dad's '71 XS1B

I 'think' the old gasket was bonded to the case. Generally speaking, is a sealant recommended for the side covers and other things like the valve adjust ports? For using a stone or wet sandpaper: might be dumb question but what method do you use to avoid getting particulates or abrasives where...

    Rescuing Dad's '71 XS1B

Hey everyone! I had to take the clutch side cover off and that gasket was bonded to the case to a degree that I have never seen before. I tried every method I could think of to get the old gasket off and ended up finally resorting to acetone and a carbide-tipped chisel. I have plastic scrapers...
