Popping Noise After Carb Rebuild at Idle

Yeah thanks for the info. Interesting! Crazy the differences between the genuine and non-genuine parts. I have the all metal (no rubber tip) needle valve. For those with the all metal float needles, in your experience are these valves sealing tight for the duration or do they leak over time...

Popping Noise After Carb Rebuild at Idle

UPDATE: Finally got parts (and time). Went up 1 size from stock on main and idle jets. Also, got me a clear tube setup from ebay. Fluid level in left carb was 2mm low. Fluid level in my left carb (the popping noise culprit side) was 3.5mm low. Is this low enough to cause problems? In...

    Right Carb Running Rich

Thanks for the link to that "special tool." Been searching the forum for it! Just ordered one! Regarding the needle jet replacement... do I just pull them out? Seems like a bit of brute force would be required. I have some replacements so was going to just grab some pliers and yank them out...

And now for the dumb question... where is the relay? In the switch?

    Blinker Issues

Hello all! Currently sorting through several things with the 79 650SF. Amongst them I have some blinker issues. Right side lights up but it does not blink. Left side does not light up at all and obviously does not blink (ha!). Checked and all the bulbs are good. I had read in another thread...

Popping Noise After Carb Rebuild at Idle

Adjusted to 28mm. Left no longer leaking, Right still leaking. Lesson learned. Mikuni genuine parts only moving forward…

Popping Noise After Carb Rebuild at Idle

Thanks @jpdevol Upon closer inspection, both carbs are leaking gas. Float valves definitely not sealing. Stumbled upon this masterpiece of a write-up (@2manybikes): 2M's non-OEM Floats Investigation Resetting to 28-29mm. Stay tuned....

Popping Noise After Carb Rebuild at Idle

Got from Mikes… sure you’ve seen them. I’m going to take them apart and check out the floats. I have a feeling I have a leaky float that is not “floating”. Where do you go to get your genuine Mikuni stuff?

Popping Noise After Carb Rebuild at Idle

Yeah. Set them at 24 mm plus or -1 mm. It did come with new float valves…

Popping Noise After Carb Rebuild at Idle

Popping noise coming out of Left carb (see video) after carb kit rebuild. Added K & N air filter pods (Left pod has gas in it (WTF). Right pod is dry. Right carb is not popping). I realize now that I probably need to upsize my idle jets and my main jets if I’m going to run pods. Haven’t done...

    Right Cylinder Timing

Just pulled the rod out completely and both pins are facing the same direction. I guess this makes sense. As-is, the wiring to the coils is flip-flopped and my timing is 180° off. As mentioned, I guess that’s the only way it would be able to run in its current state So since the pins on both...

    Right Cylinder Timing

You nailed it. I'm not going to even try to guess why PO did this.... To correct, should be able to switch the wires back and then remove the advance weights from the tabs in the disc, rotate shaft and disc 180, insert advance weights back into the disc, good to go???

1979 Carb Holder with Vacuum Barbs?

@gggGary Read your thread on petcock rebuild. Fantastic/Appreciated!! Thanks @5twins Very helpful in terms of additional info on theory of operation... @GrumpyOldMan - It tells me the two sides of the tank are not independent and isolated from each other. I suppose the only benefit to having...

1979 Carb Holder with Vacuum Barbs?

Thanks for the insight @grizld1. I purchased some non-barbed boots from 650Central and some threaded barbs (not sure if Pro-Flow but talked to the guy and he was well aware of what I'm trying to do and recommended these would work). Said the same thing about keeping the right permanent if I...

1979 Carb Holder with Vacuum Barbs?

Hey Guys, Can't find a carb holder with vacuum barbs for my stock 79 XS650F (special). If I'm removing my airbox and using an air filter pod, can I use these? https://www.mikesxs.net/yamaha-xs650-carb-holder-w-air-barbs-70-77-bs38-oem-447-13555-01-00-447-13565-01-00.html Surprised MikesXS...

    Carbs - Carburetors

Anyone got a link to a suitable 90-degree driver that will squeeze in nicely to turn the synchronizing screw? I found a few online but some of them have larger "driver heads" that might not fit in that small space.... if anyone can share would be great! Thanks!

    Right Cylinder Timing

I mean it's pretty smooth but I wouldn't say it's like butter, but I'm trying to rotate this shaft with my fingers twisting it by the threads. I would not say it rotates easy and smooth. It takes a little bit of work and again is not like butter smooth. Kind of hard to describe… Now I just...

    Right Cylinder Timing

I did clean and lube the shaft. My thought is if the spring is literally loose at full retard, then theoretically only one spring is responsible for getting it all the way there. Are the 2 springs supposed to be identical? Valid question about the dwell meter. My meter has options for 2-12...

    Right Cylinder Timing

OK... observed something. Do your springs on your Advance rotate your shaft all the way home? Mine do not. It leaves it maybe a degree shy of rotating all the way home. Also the spring on the left (in the video) does not have ANY tension on it when I manual rotate the shaft home (it's...
