Rotor melted itself 500km after rewind?

Hey all, if anyone's curious on an update: Got Jim's rotor installed. (Thanks again man) Old rotor seemed to have shorted out on the housing due to vibrations. See pics attached. I'd try to repair it, but any soldering job I could do I doubt would last with vibrations. Anyhow, just gotta...

Rotor melted itself 500km after rewind?

Good point. You talking about the axle the rotor rides on? The first time I'm not too certain what caused the problem, but looked original so just chaulked it up to old age.

Rotor melted itself 500km after rewind?

Thanks everyone. Jims got a rotor I'll be grabbing from him soon. As for the stator, hopefully that's in good shape, have yet to take a look and see where that mysterious strand came from.

Rotor melted itself 500km after rewind?

Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah originally was "sealed" up with yellow tape after the rewind but that's long gone. Doubt he will refund as it's been almost a year since the rewind. How about the PMA swap? Sort of done with tinkering with the stock charging system. Also, quick look through...

Rotor melted itself 500km after rewind?

Hey all, hope y'all have gotten out with the nicer weather coming through in Canada here. Anyhow, took the bike out yesterday for the first ride of the season, and now my rotor self destructed (again). Originally it died last year, and brought it to a rotor/motor rewind shop (seems to deal...

    Can't get bike to go past 140km/h, 1979 xs650SE

Okay good to know. I'll start digging into the low charging aspect. Most likely brushes/rotor, as a bad regulator would cause a overcharge condition and diodes a no charge condition if I'm correct?

    Can't get bike to go past 140km/h, 1979 xs650SE

Yeah I forgot to hold the throttle open, was thinking about that on the way home lol. Probably expect around 100psi cold with throttle open. Maybe I'll try a new battery before doing the alternator swap and see what that does. Is it common for the whole charging system to just die or is it...

    Can't get bike to go past 140km/h, 1979 xs650SE

Small update, got around to checking the gearing, 17 front 34 rear. Rear tire size is MT90-16 M/C 74H Shinko E-240. Compression test @ 0°c (seems like a worn engine to me) 80psi left 90psi right I've attached a photo of the spark plugs as well incase anyone is curious. Seems to me it's...

    Can't get bike to go past 140km/h, 1979 xs650SE

I've gone through all the bullet connections and wiring while I had the bike apart doing repairs. Connections to the battery are solid and I've gone through all the connectors in the headlight assembly, as well as on the frame and cleaned and/or repaired. Fuse box was upgraded to a blade style...

    Can't get bike to go past 140km/h, 1979 xs650SE

Sorry for the late replies guys, work was busy. @5twins, you'd be right, I was reading basic jetting guides and with my current basic knowledge of how a engine should run. We just got snow so I won't be able to do any testing for a while now lol. I'll definitely try a washer as you've stated...

    Can't get bike to go past 140km/h, 1979 xs650SE

That's so we'll explained, thankyou. Yes I haven't retuned the pilots since I've resynced the carbs, I'll check that but that's where it liked it beforehand. I definitely thought it was odd too, especially when I was around 2 turns out on a size smaller pilot jet (which is even weirder cause I...

    Can't get bike to go past 140km/h, 1979 xs650SE

Yeah that's what I got this for as well, a weekend or evening rider to get to the gym or wherever in the city or around. I'm just trying to get it as tip top as I can. My 81 cx500 hits 175 easier then this which is why I'm kinda wondering what's going on. I wonder if my jetting is on the...

    Can't get bike to go past 140km/h, 1979 xs650SE

@ 5twins Most likely has charging issues. I was going to do a PMA upgrade over the winter as the bikes all original and as an insurance to prevent future problems. Im with you as it's a little low, though I don't know if it'll cause spark issues unless the coils expecting a 13.7+ voltage...

    Can't get bike to go past 140km/h, 1979 xs650SE

I've checked charging voltage, which is around 12.8-13.1v at idle. Rewired the fuse box and organized the mess inside the headlight assembly. (Verifying everything is electrically correct) New start/engine kill switch assembly and New ignition key cylinder. There isn't much grounds on the bike...

    Can't get bike to go past 140km/h, 1979 xs650SE

Sorry I kept forgetting to add to the OP I have done that already, rockers in spec. Timing set to stock, carbs syncd and verified it gets into proper timing advance. I think I'm just expecting too much as 5twins alluded to lol.

    Can't get bike to go past 140km/h, 1979 xs650SE

I grabbed the bike as lean running with missing mufflers and pod filters. So it's as good as I can get it with my prior knowledge of tuning and such. I'll count the teeth but afaik it's stock.

    Can't get bike to go past 140km/h, 1979 xs650SE

Okay, so I'm most likely just fighting old age with the bike then. Motor should get a rebuild as Ive got no clue to the condition of the cam chain guide and general engine. She ticks/slaps alot at idle, rocker clearance are in spec so must either be something Internal or something rattling...

    Can't get bike to go past 140km/h, 1979 xs650SE

No windshield, and possibly though cruising with the guys I'm around 5-10km/h within their speed and my speedo. Could be just a bad calibration but it's not at redline. Definitely around the 6k mark. I did just resync the carbs as the right side was out by around a turn and half. Bike idles...

    Can't get bike to go past 140km/h, 1979 xs650SE

Hey guys, new to the forum but have read through many many posts trying to figure this out and finally decided to just ask. I got a 1979 xs650SE that I've modified lightly. New ignition coils, Uni pods, emgo tapered shorty exhaust, BS38 carbs original. Cafe style seat. Went on a cruise today...
