    Topend Rebuild

I'm sure dreading taking my XS1-B down for a top end rebuild. I have it running great, and I'm almost afraid to mess with it, especially with summer just around the corner. It burns oil, the cam chain is stretched out, and occasionally it beaches a cloud of smoke when starting it. The bottom end...

    Top end rebuild

So I have a 1971 xs1-b 650 with unknown miles. No history from the previous owner, and no speedometer on the bike when I bought it. I have no idea about the actual mileage, but I'm guessing a lot. The cam chain seems to be stretched out enough that I can't set the ignition timing correctly. I...

    Leaky Carbs

Is it possible to get carbs not to leak when you leave the petcocks on? The needles and seats look fine, and the floats are set at exactly 25mm. I ordered new needles and seats but they sent the wrong ones. It's not a big deal to just shut the gas off. I was just wondering. My bike is a 71 xs1-b...

    Stripped screw holes.

My bike is a 1971 Yamaha xs1-b. It has Mikuni carbs. They are 38s. There are stripped float bowl screw holes on both carbs. I am thinking about getting slightly longer screws, and putting a nut on the back side. I'm sure open to the right way to fix this problem. Thanks

    Stripped screw holes

On both of my Mikuni 38 carbs, there are stripped float bowl screw holes in the body of the carburetor. Any suggestions? I was thinking about buying slightly longer screws, and putting a nut on the back side. Any better suggestions? 1971 Yamaha xs1-b. Thanks!

    No power

Why is my 71 xs1-b low on power from idle to 3,500 rpm? Stock everything. BS38 carbs cleaned as well as I can get it.130 main jet, and 145 pilot jet. I think I will try a 147.5 pilot jet as soon as I get out of this cast. The mufflers are not stock, but they aren't straight through pipes.

    TX750 swingarm

Why are tx750 swingarms special? I have seen them mentioned several times in various posts. Thanks

    Headlight adjustment

I am using an automotive sealed beam headlight in my xs1-b. The sealed beam fits up against the chrome trim ring on the front of the headlight bucket. It is held in place by little wire retainers. The problem is I can't tip the headlight bucket down far enough to properly align the headlight...

    Xs1-b 650

Well I hate to admit it, but I'm walking away from my 71 650 for a while. I just can't get it to idle right. New points, new plugs, new plug wires, and the carbs have been apart and cleaned four times. When I first start it, it revs to about 3,000 rpm. then slowly drops in rpm until it dies. I...

    Carb sync.

When trying to sync the carbs on a Yamaha xs1-b using welding rods, or drill bits, what holds the butterfly in that position?

    Xs1-b Timing

It looks like I can't rotate the points backing plate far enough to the right to correctly time the right cylinder. It's close, but not exact. With the plate rotated all the way to the right, the timing is still too retarded. Same thing goes for the left cylinder. What's happening? New points...

    POWER

I'm beginning to wonder if my xs1-b is low on power. I have a little over 2,000 miles on it now and it seems a little sluggish. The last 650 I owned was about 50 years ago and I just can't remember how it should perform. My last three bikes have all been 100hp an up, and that has jaded my...

    Tachometer rebuild 4

I have just over a hundred miles on my tachometer rebuild with the ho-made bushing, and it's working just fine. Does sixty mph at four thousand rpm sound right? I'm just wondering if the tac is still reading correctly.

    Tachometer rebuild part deux

As can be seen from the photo of my failed attempts, one screw is never enough, (somehow that just doesn't sound right). With the brass screw in the drill, and holding it against the belt sander, it's fairly easy to sand out what sort of looks like the bushing. Using the old bushing as a guide...

    Tachometer rebuild XS2

I just completed a rebuild on my xs2 tachometer, successfully I might add. I will be posting a few pictures, and little tidbits of knowledge that I picked up along the way. This does not apply to the xs1 or the xs1-b. They are beasts of a different stripe. This worked well on my crimped together...

    Tachometer rebuild.

Finished! It took all damn day, but it's back together and working just fine, for now anyway. Looks pretty darn good with the new face if I do say so myself. What a learning experience! I'm not sure how long it will last, but you can make a replacement bushing for the bottom of the indicator...

    Tachometer

Well, without really having a clear path forward, I've decided to attempt a repair on my tachometer. It has completely quit working, so I have nothing to lose. If the problem is the main bottom bushing, I have no idea where to locate a replacement, or how to build a new one. I'll cross one...

For Sale - Yamaha XS 2 Speedometer

Nice 72 speedometer. Has the soft rubber ring on top. Speedometer works, but the needle bounces a little at speeds above 60mph. The odometer indicates about 23,000 miles. I personally put 1325 miles on it before locating a NOS unit. $150 free shipping included.
