    How Would You Fix This?

'81 Special with an earlier rear fender. I have a backpack that fits over the sissy bar and sits on the fender between the seat and the tail light. When the pack is off, there's the remnant of the Special tail light mount. Would like to replace that with something else to improve the look...

    Anybody remember ignition pictures?

Years ago there was a thread with several pictures of oscilloscope traces of an xs ignition system that I can't find now. The way I remember them, which could be wrong, the pictures were black and white, on the large side, are really comprehensive and done by somebody experienced. Anybody...

    free electronic ignition code!

I've been meaning to write this for awhile, and finally finished it up. It is C code for an XS650 Special-like ignition. It is for the TM4C123G evaluation board, which is a tiny little controller board you can get for around $15 these days. Add a coil firing transistor circuit, and buffering...

price of tools in the '60s

Came across this little comparison of tool prices then and now. I like the line that paraphrased says, "adjusted for inflation a top shelf circular saw would set you back $458. No wonder grandpa had so many hand saws." I can remember things were hard to buy..., it was more of an event, and my...

Why don't the sump cover and starter gears cover use lock washers?

Is there a reason? Does the compressed gasket act as a lock washer? Or would a lock washer continue to compress the gasket and eventually kill it?

    Clunk when turning engine off

I started a thread on this a while back but without a video. Sometimes it will clunk when I turn the engine off and sometimes there's no sound, and other times a kind of a whirr as it turns off. I'm concerned about the clunk but I'm at a loss as to what it could be. The first example of the...

Don't destroy your crank with your starter.

Somewhere I read a story of a guy in the old days who laid an XS650 crank on the counter at a dealership, and the old guy behind the counter knew immediately what had happened, without asking any questions. The starter can catch wrong with a big loud "THUNK" and cause the crank to separate, in...

    unusual slipping clutch?

'81, all stock clutch. No problems riding, seems completely normal. But...today I was on the top of a hill and for fun I thought I'd coast down it and pop the clutch to start the bike. Popped it in 2nd and couldn't feel the engine turning, or even a jolt. Pulled in the clutch and put it in...

    Different way to U-turn

Different way to do a U-turn. I usually drag the rear brake and do it slowly. But -- I have done this by accident, and you might have too. It feels like kind of a whip effect (and feels like you almost fell). Your timing has to be just right, but it might be instinctive too. I'll probably...
