    Bike just......died.

Wow! up above there is a tab XS650 Tech, under that is articles one of which is electrical. the last three items in that section would be a good place to start reading. most likely a charging issue, then look for ignition issues if you have no spark, after you are sure the charging looks...

Ignition is 90 degrees out somehow

Perhaps this will help; http://www.britcycle.com/Manuals/BoyerTroubleShooting.htm and or; http://www.tioc.org/boyer/boyertestnewweb.htm not Yamaha but Triumph and BSA have been using these for years. Second site has lots of good basic info! And of course one more for good luck...

    oil filter

IMHO we are still trying the wrong solutions. The only solution I believe will work is moving the filter down at least 25 mm with a spacer much like the racer version Mike sells, so the filter is out of all that turbulence. The sump pickup on a Kawasaki Nijani 1400, that I was working on last...

Pod Filters ? or stick a hot poker in your eye ?

Peanut, I ran the Uni-Pods on both my Mikuni VM (round slide 34 mm) carbs and my 2008 CVK carbs. Same size fits both, sweet. 5Twins runs Uni-Pods on his 1978 38mm Mikuni original carbs. All have worked well. The CVK's make starting my bike much easier than the seperate VM34 with two choke...

    RD 400 fuel tank

My painter put 7 coats of clear on the tank and later told me to use 1500 grit sandpaper with water to smooth out the finish. And he does $1000 paint jobs all the time that look like $1,000,000 dollars. Great fix!!!

    Wanted - TX500 or XS500 Carbs

Sonny, The owner was pretty hard on the bike and everything was worn out. I believe the crank and rod bearings and a chain or two had to be replaced. Balance chain and cam chain. It was a shame to spend so much money on such an abused motorcycle as it was still only worth $500 when I was...

    Wanted - TX500 or XS500 Carbs

Sonny, Back in the day, when we just took on the Yamaha dealership in 1977, I worked on one exactly the year and color you have. It was truly a hateful experience. Sorry, but that's my opinion for anything it is worth! Good Luck!

Pod Filters ? or stick a hot poker in your eye ?

Peanut, Around here their reference to pod filters are these ones. They work great! IMHO, I don't know how any bike works with those! Good Luck http://www.unifilter.com/

    Cam/Crank chain timing riddle

Between the; Cam Chain- DID 219FTSS x 106 L and Tsubaki BF05M x 106 the Tsubaki is heavier. I would go the Tsubaki in any of my next projects. Just MHO! You have the cam timing down pat but I always like to include this link as reference; http://www.650motorcycles.com/CamTiming.html I...

Or perhaps a plate on top of your battery box beside that chain idler and mount it back there. Always fun when you are trying to play hide and seek with required electronics.

    RD 400 fuel tank

I've never seen a motorcycle hog tied to a bench before! ha ha ha Great Idea! I had painted my frame grey as well but came to find it's harder to keep clean, guessing manufactures figured that out long ago and almost all have black frames. That writing on the tank should come off as it is...

    Where to start?

Remove the two very large drain plugs, drain all the oil, and then remove the sump cover that the front drain plug was screwed into, 6 bolts (10 mm wrench). Check the filter to see what you might have. A light oil down each spark plug hole and a few kicks to lube the rings a little. Drain the...

    New-b first thread and build

I have a Son who learned to weld at school, he's a rod burner. He operated excavators for years, very good at it. I worked at a welding shop when going to school, I'm a rod burner. My buddy who is a welder does all my welding chores. Some things you leave to the experts! IMHO
