    Misfiring

Make sure that your battery has a full charge before you do anything else. A weak battery can affect the way the engine runs. If it is low, recharge it (if it will take a charge) and check the alternator output. If this all checks out, let us know and we will go from there. Dave

    Is the right hand mirror?

On my 1980 the nut holding the mirror secure is reverse threaded, that is, counter-clock to tighten, clock-wise to loosen. Dave

    quick coil question...

I would replace the coil just based on its age. I read the entire thread because my 80 was acting in the same way. I went through the carbs several times, found a used TCI box and switched it out, reset valves, etc. Then I remembered that I had replaced the rotor a few months earlier, and...

    Gas running out of Carb

You might have some garbage in your tank, maybe a bit of rust even, and you might benefit from adding an inline filter for each fuel line from the tank to the carb. A bit of crud can prevent the needle and seat from sealing fuel flow properly. I have had this problem on several bikes, and the...

    XS650 Dragbike lives again...

Sounds great! A quick 1/8 to 1/4 conversion chart puts your potential time in the low 13's. Not bad for a vintage 650. Dave

    drive chain

I use the Izumi chain that I got from Mike's. Seems to be pretty good quality. Sure got rid of a lot of slop in the drive train. Also put on new front and rear sprokets. Dave

    Yet another carb thread!

Back to tools used to sync the carbs. One way to dampen the pulses that a single cynlinder causes with a vacuum gauge is to insert a carburetor-type fuel filter in line between the carb and the guage. Smooths out the needle very well. True, a manometer is probably more accurate, and I use one...

Charging system causing an engine miss ?

No clearance problems with the Radio Shack magnet. Cheap, small, strong.

Charging system causing an engine miss ?

Since this started shortly after your rotor replacement, I would suspect that the magnet on the rotor that triggers the ignition is not strong enough. This happened to me, had exactly the same running characteristics. I glued a small rare earth magnet on top of the magnetized compound on the...

    charging rotor ..fix

The people that have done this have reported that here was no clearance problems. I have done it recently with a Radio Shack rare earth magnet, and there were no clearance problems. Those magnets are really small. But strong.

    Question about a "fussy first"...

Your clutch sounds pretty good. As far as shifting up (NOT down), I frequently don't use the clutch at all from 2nd to 5th. I have found that with the revs up and accelerating briskly, though not at full throttle, the shifts are quick and very smooth. Takes a bit of practice, but it's not...

    Electrosport came through

Want to sell it? Leo For the time being I think I will keep it, but thanks.

    Electrosport came through

Some of you may remember a recent thread, several actually, where a failed magnet on a replacement rotor caused very poor running. Although I fixed mine with a strong rare earth magnet, I was, needless to say, very unhappy over the fact that a new part caused me so much grief. So I contacted...

    TCI harness not matching

If you can't make that one work, I have a six-pin that I recently bought that I don't need. PM me if you want to talk. Dave

    Replacement rotor won't work

You may have the trouble that I had recently with NEW replacement rotor. When it got hot, it would miss at low speeds. The problem was that the magnet that triggers the TCI was bad. Putting a small rare-earth magnet on top of the original solved the problem for me. Dave

    Magnet on rotor fixed miss

Well, those guys know a lot more than me! It's good to be among fellow enthusiasts, that's for sure.

    Magnet on rotor fixed miss

After reading in another recent thread how the magnet in some replacement rotors can be sub-par, I thought about this possible solution to a problem that has plagued me for several months. Long story short: I bought a new rotor from a vendor to fix a charging problem on my 12,000-mile 1980 650...

    alternator rotor removal

I have used the tool that Mike's sells to remove mine. It works very well. I was concerned that a traditional puller (like in your picture) might damage the windings. I also wasn't sure that it would fit. Dave
