I just acted my age, and bought a sensible motorcycle...

As my dedicated 2-up touring bike, the Ducati ST2 still is out of action due to an unresolved oil pressure issue, I sort of convinced myself that I need a (temporary ?) replacement. And ended up buying a new 2023 Honda NC 750 X....By no means a pretty or exciting bike, but a very useful one. 750...

Width of brake "pad track" or "swept area" on the 72-76 models

Could I ask you with the early models for the width of the "pad track", measured from the disc OD to the inside edge of the brake pad? (The pads and pistons are 48 mm IIRC, so I expect this measurement to be around 50-51 mm, but would like to have it confirmed) I am ordering a new disc for my...

    Just some general "carb porn"

I recently came across this modification to a VM28. The flow capacity will definitely be improved. https://www.allensperformance.co.uk/allens-mikuni-vm28-57-carburettor-specially-prepared-custom-made-radiused-air-entry/

Sanding (Emery) rolls with closed tip

I am now trying to do a light cleanup of the ports in a XT250 head, valve sizes are 38 and 32 mm. The only sanding rolls small enough to get into the "valley" both sides of the guide bosses are the cylindrical/ open end 8 mm Dremel type. These do not work the way I would like. Now, some years...

A brief report from the other end of the internal combustion supply chain.

As a few of you may know, my job is as a Chief Mechanic on seismic survey vessels. What we do is map geological formations for oil companies, to increase their probability of drilling in the right spot. Today I have been overhauling some 3 way high pressure ball valves, for our "shooting air"...

Top cut and throat cut of valve seats (question for the porting and tuning gurus)

I have posted a little bit about my XT250 project, including ports/ valve seats and cam, but this question may relate just as much to the XS and other bikes. On a bike with a single angle valve seat (45 degrees), like my XT250, I understand that a 3 angle (or more) seat will improve flow, and by...

My degree wheel setup for a Powerdynamo/ Vape (Only PMA in this case (

Thought I'd share how I solved the issue of attaching a degree wheel to my VAPE rotor. I guess the pics are pretty much self explanatory. I previously posted how I made the center hole in the degree wheel 65 mm. I also made a pointer from 2 mm TIG welding rod. Hammered flat at the tip for super...

XT250 intake port features, grind out or not?

I am now working a bit on the XT250 head, and found a couple of things I wonder what to do with (or leave as is. One is a notch from a cutting tool, towards cylinder centre, approx 1- 1.5 mm deep, 10 mm long, crescent shaped. See first attached picture. Then there is a step between the intake...

35 mm leading axle forks for disc brake.

As mentioned before, I have an ongoing 82 XT250 project (like I needed another project bike..... Now, this little XT is a nice little bike, but with a really weak drum front brake. So an upgrade to a disc brake would be useful. As actual offroad riding is legally very limited in Norway, a...

    Another video from Finland

After seeing the Finnish Santa on a TX, I thought I'd share another video from the Finnish motorcycle scene. Those Finns are definitely something else 🙂

C-C measurement for a 35 mm XS fork

As I already have mentioned in a couple of posts, I am working a bit on a 80-82 XT250. This is actually the second XT 250 I am messing with. On the previous one, I always thought the front brake was rather poor for road use. So when I somehow discovered that my 34 mm RD350 fork had the exact...

Slightly hotter cam for X250, 80-82. Pointless or not?

As mentioned in another post, I am working on a XT250 (air cooled, 2 valve , sohc, ca 1980-82) I have started some work on the head, and now I wonder if a slightly hotter cam is worthwhile or not. Megacycle have a cam with 246/ 245 duration and .415/ .395 lift. Lobe centers 106/ 106.5 This...

Yamaha XT250, thread size/ pitch in rocker shafts.

I am currently messing with a 80-82 XT 250, and need to pull the rocker shafts. They are drilled and threaded, but not a common thread. M6x1.0 does not fit, M5x0.8 can be pushed in. I suspect M6x0.75, but cannot be sure. It is impossible to check with a thread gauge. Any ideas?

    Yambits' standard seat

I have mentioned the reproduction seat from Yambits earlier, especially with regards to weight savings. (due to plastic seat pan, and most likely lighter foam) Here is a couple of pics of mine. It weighs 3.1 kg (6.83 lbs) including stock 77 hinges, latch and seat trim. The trim is not yet...

    IMD piston

I was looking for an oversize piston for my 82 XT250, and was actually googling TT250, as that model had half a point higher CR than the XT. And I found these on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/304388685753 IMD pistons, have any of you any experience with them? https://imdpistons.com/ The fact...

Anyone remember a specific 80's aftermarket luggage rack?

I bought and read almost all issues of Cycle Magazine and Cycle World during the 80's and 90's. Ads for one particular aftermarket luggage rack stuck in my memory, as it was unusual in its design. It had alloy side plates in a kind of swoopy shape. Horizontal top of course, and the bottom edge...

    Seat trim material

I wanted a seat trim for my Yambits seat, and recently bought one on eBay. Today I removed the studs, and straightened out 1 small dent, and 1 crease. It came out ok. Not 100%, but will look good from 10 ft away. So far so good. Then i polished it with Autosol, so it looks almost like new. I was...
