‘77 XS650 get it running

Do these bikes have a tendency to overheat and shut themselves off?

The bike will run beautifully for about 20ish minutes and then abruptly shut off. Then it will just roll over continuously but not fire. Let it cool off for a half hour or so and it will fire again. Run for a few minutes and shut off. Not fire again.

I do have a fan in front of the bike, between the front tire and the front of the motor, blowing onto the motor.

I was thinking it was flooding it’s self somehow but a guy I work with who is an avid dirt bike and three wheeler guy, said he thinks it’s overheating because it’s suppose to be air cooled and it’s just sitting there getting hot.
Back in the day, I commuted on mine on some 95-degree Indiana days. With lots of LONG red lights. I found that 35mph was the magic minimum speed to keep enough air going over the fins to keep the motor bearably cooled off. There were some rides where the motor would try to seize before I got home, because of all the unavoidable sitting at lights. "Rr-rrrr-rrrr-*CKGGH*-rrrr..."

Tapped on the floats. Got the gas to stop leaking. So that’s a win.
I'll be back, LOL
the left side points mechanism was touching the rotating shaft, but the right side wasn’t
HUH? the points setting is critical to running if it's running decent on both they aren't far off of where they should be.
20ish minutes and then abruptly shut off
That won't be a gas cap issue then, that'll slowly lean out the mix till the motor stumbles to a halt.

As a rule I won't run an engine in the garage very long. certainly not a half hour multiple times. Can you ride around the area?
My trick is I ride uphill away from home so I can coast back to the garage. The push up the driveway still sucks................

Thank you. I do have a replacement fuel cap seal in my “cart” waiting for purchase right now. I noticed the current one is dry rotted and cracked pretty well.

It’s just a matter of finding more things to put in the cart that I need to replace so I can meet the free shipping dollar amount now lol.

I’ve ordered 3 loads of parts so far. A 4th load isn’t far off.

Sorry to annoy you.
Like Marty said, I wasn’t annoyed, just sometimes if I take the time to look into what I may have some questions about it makes it easier for others to understand the problem and me to understand the answer.

Took apart my Tach and Speed gauges ti replace the bulbs. The rubber seals are cracked and falling apart.

I’ve looked through other threads but haven’t found a definitive *this* solution.

I looked at the Yamaha site and the seals are $33 each. Not really interested in paying that for 2 piece a of rubber.

Does anyone have a nice solution for this?

Thanks again everyone.

There was a nice repair done with weatherstripping over at XS11.club. Same clocks. You’ll have to search a bit like here.

If anyone is up for it. I’ve found a new issue to chase haha.

I found last night that my right side turn signal does not always work. Left side is fine. Always works.

The front-right light will not come on but the back-right and the indicator on the tree will come on. They will stay solid. Not blinking.

If I give the bike a little throttle, the front light will come on and they will blink like they are supposed to.

I did a little digging already and found some saying it could be a bad battery, but the battery is brand new. Others saying it’s a bad ground, but this is a new problem. It wasn’t doing this before.

I have also noticed that when the bike is at idle and I turn the lights on and turn the turn signals on, the motor starts to stutter and will sometimes stall out.

I started thinking maybe a bad coil as someone had suggested before.

I’ve only worked on the gas tank, carbs, air boxes, brakes and the points/timing.

I have not done anything with the valves or the cam chain.

For knowing nothing about bikes I am proud of what I have accomplished. However it feels like it’s becoming a one thing after another type deal now lol.

I guess it’s time to learn more stuff.
What Jim said.

There is a hole on the bottom of the gas cap for the tank to vent. Damaged rubber seals would help the tank to vent rather than cause the prob

Sorry to annoy you.

More the fact that some people will ask questions and use youtube instead of having a manual to use as people answer questions. The manual in conjunction with help from here helps you, and us, more than waiting for a response.................once upon a time there was no internet and manuals were the only way to sort out problems
