Hello everyone, I’m new to this forum though I have been reading/researching for a while on here. I recently picked up an ‘83 xs650, (well most of one.) My plan is to build a hard tail chopper. It needs a lot but I’m not in a hurry. I have cut off the rear end of the frame and have a Tcbros hard tail ready to weld on. I plan to rip in to the motor as it was not running when I got it and check some things out while I save up to buy parts. I have a long list and a lot to do but I’m pretty excited. Thanks for looking!

Welcome to the circus!!
I've never hardtailed one, but based on what I've seen and read here on the forum, putting the motor back in while you do your welding will go a long way toward making sure everything stays nice and straight.

Yeah the engine will go back on it for welding, or at the least for tacking it up, then i may remove to finish welds

I’m doing a late 81’ hardtail now. Welcome and have fun! Seems like you have skills and tools already. May I ask what you do for a living?

I could tell by your intro and engine stand you are no virgin. Haha If you run into a pickle and need parts, gimme a shout.

I haven't done much lately on this project due to moving, however in the last few days i did a little work.
1: electric starter deleted, 1-53/64 freeze plug installed
2: removed sump filter and discovered plastic debris, guess that means im tearing down the motor and replacing guide...
3: installed all balls steering neck roller bearings
I believe next week or so i am going to weld the hard tail up. so its not a lot but it is progress.

One piston and cylinder were pretty nasty, looked like some water got in, the rings were stuck, took some work to unstick them. Everything cleaned up pretty well though. I don’t have pics of everything all cleaned up
