There's a few potentially interesting details visible...
  • the engine has a header of sorts rather than a cast exhaust manifold. Does it have a larger exhaust system to suit, say 2" OD?
  • the carb seems to be on a aftermarket manifold tailored for that carb (?)
  • does it maybe have other engine mods, like a reground cam?
  • it has what I think are Toyo SR5 wheels, which are probably 1" or so wider than stock Datsun wheels
  • does it have a 4-spd or 5-spd tranny? If 5-spd, probably from the SR5 that gave up its wheels (?)
  • aftermarket steering wheel, Sun tach in the dash

-Unsure about engine mods, all I heard is that it was completely rebuilt. My friend’s uncle helped with the install, I’ll have to get in touch with him about the details, it’s been a while though.

I'd say stock...
I'll bet with you on that...stock manifold with an adapter plate. Much more obvious now, looking at the first pic from yesterday's posting. Like the 2" exhaust. I'll bet that the 5-spd is a Toyo SR5. I doubt that someone would make the effort to adapt a Datsun 5-spd to the Toyo motor. In any case, the Datsun 5 spd arrived much later than the Toyo, which makes it even less likely that it is a Datsun box (unless of course its from a Fairlady).

It crazy that all this stuff was "dime-a-dozen" back in the day and is now worth a fortune. I cut my (automotive) teeth on Beetles, Datsun 510s and then BMW 2002's, with a few oddballs thrown in the mix. I would love to have one of each in my fleet, but certainly can't afford to do so at today's prices.
 
Well, this is a timely topic. Just yesterday I was reminiscing with old friends, what our first cars were. Mine was a 1971 2 door Datsun 510. Probably one of my favourite rides of all time. I drove it for several years, commuting to university and left it essentially stock because I was a starving student. Once I started working I began to do some cosmetic improvements.

As I recall I added body side moldings; fog lights; a fancy steering wheel; tachometer; chrome reverse wheels with fatter radial tires and a noisier muffler. I drove the $hit out of that car and it never let me down. The next set of mods included a “racing style” seat and a complete motor rebuild. I had the block bored and installed .040” over 240Z pistons; SSS cams; 2-1/2” exhaust and the icing on the cake was a pair of 48mm Weber side draft carbs with SS velocity stacks. It was a beautiful motor to look at. I was running 220 psi compression and the car was like a jackrabbit. Downside of the mods was terrible fuel economy. I was getting low to mid teens mpg! That was a time that everyone just bolted on stuff that was supposed to make the car faster. Tuning the engine with the mods made was a luxury left to those with deep pockets. Btw I didn’t have a garage so I rebuilt the motor in the basement of a townhouse I was renting with 2 friends.

A year after the mods were completed, Mother Nature had her way with the car and rust surfaced everywhere. Fenders, rocker panel and structural members were rotting away. I put it up for sale and ended up trading it for a 1965 2 door, Galaxy 500.

Unfortunately there are no known surviving pictures of the car. I looked to buy one decades ago but they are waaay out of budget for me as I was looking for a nice one. I think at today’s prices, the car I’d like would top $50K easily - not happening.

Ya I’m curious to see how bad it is once I figure out how I want to tackle it, worse case I can can do a chop top right? :laugh:

So I’ve got the fuel lines replaced, put a few gallons in the tank, no leaks. Drain and replaced coolant, oil level good and clean, looks clean in the distributor. Just need a battery, there wasn’t one in there. Any recommendation? Google search for early 70’s Corolla recommends a 24F group with 600-700 CCA. Or just whatever fits the tray with those CCA?
 
Motocraft.... a Holley clone.
Not quite; Autolite/Motorcraft 2100 and 4100 were developed independent of Holley, in an effort to bring fuel control in-house by Ford. They were fed up with the teapot Holley 4000s of the 50s. Holley remained a supplier through the 90s, but the 2100/4100 carbs don't share any circuitry or parts with any Holley units. Holley's 2v was simply a cut-down of their 4100 series, which came out after the 2100/4100s.
 
Google says early 70’s Corollas used either a 24 or 35, the 35 is a little smaller so I picked one up, looks a little big in there. The L and W are ok but the H is about an inch from the hood when closed. The cables will reach though, should I run it or is it overkill? A group 26 is recommended for the 1200 but the measurements aren’t that much smaller, still 8” height which the 35 is.

Ya but it’s actually a fiberglass hood so I guess I don’t have to worry about that. I just exchanged it for a 26 and realized when I got home the terminals are the other way :doh: the cables will still reach though. I donno, maybe I’ll just go back for the 35, better CCA for the 1.8l engine?

Making progress.

Went with a 26 battery, strapped down with temporary zip ties.

Had to extend some wires, noticed some dodgy connections and replaced them, and cleaned the ground connections.

Replaced a kinked coolant line, found a molded one that fit perfect. Decided to replace the thermostat gasket and check the temperature rating.

I also didn’t like the lines going in and out of the heater core, I was going to look for replacements but the whole assembly looked pretty dirty, didn’t feel like get blasted with rat poop, so I removed it and just bypassed the core for now.

Also got some new shoes, $350 at discount tires, happy with that.

Filled up the coolant and cranked it over, started up right away then died after a second or two. Went out to take a look and gas was pissing out the carb. Stuck floats? Going to take the carb apart tomorrow to inspect.

I’m wondering if I need a regulator with that Holley pump? I looked it up and I have the Mighty Mite model, 7-10 psi, and says a regulator might be needed for certain carbureted applications.

The motor sounded healthy for the 2 seconds it ran at least :D
 
Congratulations, you have a runner! Carb leaks after a 10-year hiatus is not at all uncommon. It may well be that all of the gaskets in the carb body have dried out and shrunk, with leaks as a result. A rebuid kit from the local auto parts store will probably resolve that. Shockingly clean engine bay... nice to see.
