PROS
  • Bike runs great and had a tune-up last summer
  • New tires
  • Mostly original
  • Complete spare engine and carb set
  • New plugs and wires last summer
  • Wired new LED in headlight bucket for high beam

CONS
  • Paint chipped on tank (no dent)
  • Scuffs on a side cover (fell off during a ride)
  • Broken fender brace
  • Scratch on the left engine cover. The spare engine has un-chromed side covers. I did not chrome these.
OTHER / HISTORY
  • I've owned this since about 1997 and I'm the second owner. The original owner was a shop mechanic for a Yamaha dealership and a friend of the family. The engine was bored .40 over and had some other work done on it, but I'll have to ask Randy what he did (if he remembers).
  • Valve train was lightened by the original owner.
  • The electric starter failed before I owned it and was entirely removed. The spare engine may have a starter, but I have no idea if it works.
  • Spare engine is not seized.
  • I have the original air cleaner boxes and some NOS filters.

I'm located in the Philly suburbs. I can provide better photos and videos of it running if there's interest.

Interesting pic!

What are these? :umm:
I want to say capacitors, but they aren't very big.

Only thing I can think of that makes sense with the wire configuration is diodes. Wonder if there's a dirt bike alternator with separate spark and single phase lighting coils under the LH cover?
White from the alternator lighting coil, black and red to 12 volt system.

Those are a pair of vintage coils. When I replaced the spark plug wires, I removed these and tested their resistance and they were good to go. This is a modification the original owner did in his shop. The manufacturer's name is on them, but I can't remember and can't see it without taking them back out.

One thing I can say for certain, they stuck to the old adage: "Ride em, dont hide em". Thats a respectable bit of mileage on the old girl...still in pretty good shape.
This was my first street bike. I think I was 22 or 23 at the time, and rode it quite a bit. Lots of good memories, but I no longer have the space and rarely ride it anymore. It needs a good home.

I was just about to ask the same thing! 😄
Edit: By the way, I’ve never heard of lightening the valve train. How is that done?
One way to trim weight is to replace steel valvetrain components with ones made from lighter materials such as aluminum or titanium. These include forged or billet aluminum rocker arms, valves, springs, etc. This also means the engine can rev higher, pump more air and produce more horsepower. Not sure specifically what the guy did because that was done a loooong time ago.
