My '74 RD350 was 8500. Didn't have the brake lining sensor either

That’s an Eleven Special tach. 1980/81. All of the 78/79 XS bikes are the same design with their minor differences. I believe the tach in question predates 1980 and does not belong to a Special. AFAIK, the 1978/79 XS750 had a 9,000 rpm redline.

Just seems unusual that with the same basic engine, the redline jumps from 7500 to 9000 (+20%) 77-78. Of course there are changes year upon year due to cam changes, etc., but this would often fall in the range of 500 RPM; a jump of 1500 RPM is quite something, and I would think a lot of other mods might have to happen in concert i.e. bottom end, rods, ???

All I was thinking was woohoo “the magic happens above 7000rpm” we need a great movie like that but got for motorcycles

It’s my understanding that there were in fact engine updates that led to this.
I didn’t research this as if it was important, so I did no cross checking. Take my XS750 information to the bank at your own peril.

No, I think you are correct. I have seen 7500 AND 9000 redline tachs, both attributed to XS750, so it seems very likely although, like you, I did not do a deep dive.

Ok next dumb question… just to clarify my brain. If I disconnect the plug/connector coming from alternator it won’t hurt anything right? Because the alternator requires the 12v volt field to begin a charge right?

Just going to run total loss for the shakedown runs, the harness is junk and will eventually rebuild with the steps from the reg/rect thread.

Might also go with electrex system it I decide to go race only, but haven’t decided on if it will see street cruising yet…

And btw thanks for help with tach. Unless someone with a 12000rpm XS needs a tach 😝

I would unplug the regulator too just to be on the safe side. Don't think total loss will work very long... ignition likes strong battery.

Yes my thoughts exactly. I figured I should be good for a few runs before the battery gets too low. I started unwrapping the “stock” harness and found oh so many cobbles, twist connectors bare wires solder joints and bad crimp on connectors, I was like man someone done hacked on this ole cinnamon “brown sugar”

I’ll look at charging system/rebuild/upgrade options after the newsies. I know if I started that whole process I would miss the event and then let the whole project spiral to oblivion lol. Lest I know thyself!
