Hey all-

New here, hoping someone can shine some light on this issue. Looked around and didn’t find an answer before posting…

I have a 79 XS650 and we installed a MikesXS ignition system (non PMA). We turn the ignition on and test for power at the plug (where harness connects to stator) and all is good. Check for power at the screw where the power cable is at on stator- all good. We place the stator all the way back where carbons make full contact with rotor and test for power on stator - NONE. Pull the stator out a bit so carbons aren’t making contact and we have power again on the positive wire in the harness and on the stator. Why can I be losing all power the moment the carbons on stator touch the rotor?? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I see factory charging system, rotor and stator.
I'm guessing you're using a mike's regulator, which one do you have?
I can't tell which wire on the connector you are probing.
Have you ohmed the rotor? normal is about 5.7 ohms anything below 5 ohms is getting sketchy.
even at 5.7 ohms that's a 25 watt load.
Do you have a fully charged battery?

Just thinking out loud here
But can it be the Screws Holding the Brushes and Brush holder that are mixed
Some are a bit longer

Wait wait!
the BLACK wire goes to the grounded (top, inner) brush.
You are grounding the power wire.
