1981 XS650 Special - Build Thread

Day 238 - Clutch had been slipping. Doing research here on the forum I found an upgraded clutch kit that @gggGary sells that adds an extra disk. Seemed like a no-brainer and I bought one. I can vouch for this upgrade that it works well. I did have a bad clutch cable and truth be known I'm pretty sure it was the cause of my clutch slipping but after all is said and done I'm glad I upgraded the clutch and I'm happy with it.
This is what was hiding behind the elbow

Well unfortunately, since fork oil doesn't get very hot or churned up during use, just draining it doesn't really clean the gunk out. To really get them clean inside, the forks need to come apart and be "swabbed" out .....

It's the only way to get all the gunk out, especially the build-up at the bottom.

Yeah, I know. That's a winter project when I can have time to strip 'em all the way down and clean them like you're suggesting.

1 Year Today! - One year ago today I made my 1st post here after buying my '81 Special. The bike has been a really fun project and I have learned a lot in the last year. I've met some really good folks who have been more than generous to offer valuable advice and quite honestly have found a new passion that didn't exist 366 days ago.

I don't know where I'll end up with in this hobby, but I'm sure looking forward to finding out! Since I bought this bike I've already bought a second one and I'm on the prowl for another one. Good Lord, I have a problem..

I've been slowly making this bike just a really nice survivor that seems to be falling more into the restored category than survivor, but I can't seem to get to a point where where I say "good enough". Fixin' to get my tank and side covers painted just because they're starting to make the rest of the bike look bad. I'll always keep this bike completely original and I want keep riding the wheels off of it so I'm not looking for perfection but she's sure getting shinny.

Bike look really great Jody.

An original 81SH, is the only bike I haven't got good pics of for the ID thread. Would you take some pics I could use, when its on the road. A nice side shot or about 20° from the side from the front at about headlight height.
I know not asking much,😂 just don't see the nice silver models, I think they are a good colour on the XS.
