1983 XS650 Wildly overcharging battery

I believe you're correct, Wade, but how did you determine it's a type A regulator?
I did some online research and found operating details that matched a low side regulator; double-checked that it was solid state ('69 or '70-on were). Then asked my friendly AI the same question and got the same answer.

So not 100%< but pretty sure...
 
Fwiw... AI says yes, that's an A type regulator.
I'm not 100% sold on AI yet, so take it with a grain of salt...

Me too. Always worth checking the citations to see if they make sense. Often they don't. And I find that asking the same question in slightly different ways skews the resulting AI responses quite a bit.

I quite like Claude AI that I quoted earlier in the thread. But I had to massage my question somewhat to get a really convincing answer.

Artifical Intelligence? Not really, not yet. More like a supercharged evolution from Google searches really. But progress is undoubtedly rapid.

Yep, that's why I asked about an A type and a type A regulator. Putting the A in front of or behind the "type" didn't make any difference... it gave the same answer. That does tend to reinforce it's answer in my mind.

Still not trusting though... :cautious:

There's the rub. You need to (almost) know the answer before you can believe the AI response.

Goodness only knows what anyone in business thinks asking questions with no inkling whether the AI answer is true or not.

Well, I think it's best to not go there, I'm glad to be retired. I'm sure the world's LNG plants are managing perfectly well without me :laugh2:
 
Thanks Jim, just ordered the A type Dodge regulator with the funky harness.

According to diagram below, should the middle lower pin on the regulator connect to the brown wire on bike harness?
And left pin attached to Green on bike harness?

That two pin regulator looks like the one originally recommended by PamcoPete many years ago. He was the guy who came up with the idea of using an automotive regulator on these bikes in the first place. A couple years later, I saw that Fiat regulator on eBay and liked the "look" much better than the tin box style. It's kinda become the type 'A' regulator of choice for the later bikes ever since.

Early charging system: B Type regulator; the green lead is connected to the ungrounded (+12) brush The other brush is grounded to the engine/frame.
VR-169 voltage regulator is a Type B regulator

Late charging system: A Type regulator; the green lead is connected to a brush to create the ground path. The other brush gets +12 volts from after the ignition switch.
VR-170 voltage regulator is a Type A regulator

On both A and B regulator types: the red wire is connected to switched +12, and the Case must grounded to the frame NOT just to the battery box that is insulated on rubber anti-vibration bushings.
