2024 Yamaha XS650 Society Inaugural Westby WI Rally. Sept 8th though Friday Sept 13th

Starting a new inaugural ride would be a good opportunity to reach out to XS1100, XS750/850, XS/TX750/500, SR500 and XS400 owners. Marty said the 1100 crowd used to be big on rallies and their forum demise must have left a few stranded that would welcome an opportunity to regroup and meet new XS owners. I would think there must be a few of the other model rider who wold love the opportunity to be involved

A recent discussion on the demise of forums, with @Travis committed to keeping this forum going as long as possible without being bought out. With owners of the 7650/850 triples and XS/TX500 Guys and Girls who have come on here for help, (due to the demise of those forums and the information lost l), got me thinking about how to keep this one evolving and expanding a little to accommodate the loss of other Yamaha XS/SR/XT forums. I have added some info for the 750/850 tripe to the ID thread.

If a hand was extended and the site accommodated some tech on the other models it has to be good for the site.

Had a sqiz at the XS400 forum and there seems to be quite drop off of patronage on there. Could it be merged onto here, (but kept seperat somehow), to save on the running cost.

The 650 Society did host an event here for many years. It was dropped from the Society for.... ( rather not go into details... water under the bridge ) The event is still going on very Labor Day ... at the Inn... north end of Westby.... Borgen's downtown is THE breakfast spot.... every Sunday... nearby Rockton.... several 100 chickens give up their all for a chicken dinner... it's a Harley parking lot. Search out the Amish WalMart..... have a meal with the Nuns south of LaForge.... great roads..... watch out for Amish buggies...." Spook Cave ".... you'll ride in a Jon boat... I've been going there for many... many years. Will do so this year also.... but can't get there until Saturday afternoon. Will attend Davenport 28-31... the rip to Westby. 😎

I'm just going for the food
What time Sunday does the Chicken dinner start ( I know I just happen to like chicken dinners )

I certainly don't want to take over this thread, but wanted to reply to this.

Isn't XS11.com now XS11.club? They have a place to go, and choose not to? Many probably went to facebook.

The quote below is what I said. I hope to keep this site going for as long as possible, but who knows what the future holds.

Over the years, I've been approached by every forum-buying group out there to sell this site. Although it can be tempting to sell out to save the headache of running these sites and get some cash to boot, I've resisted because I don't like what they usually do to the forums they buy. This site brings in less and less money from ads, and donations and site supporter members are the only thing keeping it going. Server costs creep up and revenue creeps down, and I worry about the day they meet. So I thank all of you who support this site either financially, by contributing content, or both! This site is coming up on 15 years old in September, and I hope to keep it around for another 15 years at least!

I'm not so sure. People come here for the XS650, and don't want threads, searches, galleries, etc to be convoluted. The whole XS400 site was a spin-off of this one for that exact reason. Keeping separate forums with a shared login (if possible) might be better, but this conversation should be done elsewhere.

My favourite saying these days is every sunrise I see is a good day. At our age a couple of members who do not get to see the sunrise every day could halve the content on here.

Only a suggestion, @Travis as you say, there may b/will b, a time when revenue and content aren't compatible.

That 1100 site is lucky to have more than 2 posts a day.

Sorry for the hijack @Kevin Werner just thought your comment on the lack of response or difficulty of Facebook 650 groups, an extending hand to other XS/TX Yamaha riders might not do any harm and maybe some good.

I'll stop making silly sugestions now

I just changed mine to Recurring so I don't forget
I already support public television and I get just as much enjoyment out of this website as PBS now It just happens automatically
That and I'm always challenged to fix something (thanks !! guys ) rather than just whine about it ( Ok still whining just not all the time)

There’s more to that story. First, the XS1100 is a great bike at a bargain.
The owner off XS11.com lost interest and went MIA. No updates to the site, etc. Gradually, it became impossible to use. Enough said there.
Finally, several of the ringleaders aged out and/or died. The list of important contributors over there who are recognized as deceased is pretty long.

Many contributors to that community had stuck around, even though they had moved on from the XS11. By now, the majority still going to the few remaining rallies are riding a more modern motorcycle.

Point being, to keep this going, we need and active forum with willing contributors to keep it fresh and also a core willing to put things together and press flesh. XS11.com had the advantage of a bike with legs. People could and would make a transcontinental journey on that thing. AND, we were all younger.

No problem, discussion is a good thing. I was trying to figure a kind was to say that I don't think I would be capable of organizing how to keep numerous different groups straight and really enjoy the little group that is XS650. Not to say others are not welcome but I thought an XS650 focus is our focus.

I can say through experience that making an actual rally happen is no small undertaking. The Yamaha 650 Society has historically been responsible for most of them in this group. The days of a newsletter club are over. This is the current way forward. Still it remains that @desmoman900 and remnants of the Society is carrying the load as far as gatherings go. Kudos to @Kevin Werner and @Ben1 for stepping up!

If the few other riders showing up enjoy the venue and spread the word a repeat next year would happen. We won't know unless we try. SAS motto, "Who dares wins"

In my usual generous way I went and explored the driftless yesterday and today. Wasted 280 miles worth of gas going nowhere on curvy backroads.
Believe it or not you are looking down on Hwy33 through Wildcat Mountain State Park. (just left of the dead tree) I wasn't sure I liked it so had to repeat that section three times.

Got so tired I had to stop there and rest.

Was on some roads I have not been on before and many repeats. No shortage of fun.
Most roads are in pretty good condition some not so much. The Ulysses is great on Wisco backroads with it's compliant suspension.
Couple heads up; The Amish are out there AND horse exhaust is VERY slippery.
Gravel on corners is common. As are slow moving vehicles Ag equipment etc. Still a bunch of fine riding.

Had a very good bar hamburger with fresh local ingredients at Logan's Heros, Loganville WI. Have stopped there several times food always good.
My wandering was bounded By Baraboo to the East, Hwy33 to the North, Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers, West and South.
