'68 BSA Victor Build..... Bloody 'el mate... You 'effin daft or sommat?!?

So I bought the Victor up from the basement this morning . . . Onward and upward, as they say.
Yes indeed! Great progress.

You're not rightly sure how to round the edges off a nut that's only used to set bearing tension? I guess, if sommat gets fitted to a motorbike, it's going to get butchered somewhere along the way, I've gotten over puzzling why or how POs manage to do that. Good you've been able to find NOS replacement.

But that shiny frame, just a perfect blank canvas waiting for you to sketch in a BSA Victor.

Recovery will be a little drawn out. I have to go 30 days without any weight on that foot.... none. And then up to 6 months to find out if it takes or not.

I'm hopeful guys. :D
So I'm guessing kick starting that BSA will be out for a bit?

I wonder if a half inch drill would turn that big boy over? They do similar starting on race bikes. 🤔
I think something like that would be doable. I read and saw pics years ago where a guy took a DeWalt battery drill (I think :umm:) and a reduction drive to build a starter for a Continental A-65 on his homebuilt airplane. That's a 170 cu. in. 4 cylinder boxer.
If it'll start that, then the little Victor should be fair game.

Can be done to start small engines but there’s a danger of stripping the threads on the flywheel nut and / shearing the end of the crank. Drill isn’t as bad but some use an impact wrench.

Yes impact wrench would be major problem, either strip threads or split the flywheel!

Forget where I saw it, probably on some YouTube video, where someone made a tool out of a plumbing expansion plug that was tapered to fit snug in the cup the pull starter cord worked on and that was mounted in a drill. The rubber plug would take up some of the shock impulses and being more or less just a friction coupling would not have a problem with socket hanging up on the nut for fly wheel.

The race bikes, flat trackers etc. use a special made coupling or weld onto the end of a modified crank, then modify the case inspection cover with a seal so it doesn't throw oil. For a true resto it's not done, but a dual roller starter stand would work as well.

The one I pictured earlier is probably a more complicated and expensive model but I've seen some nice home built single motor units with the rollers connected via chain that could be built reasonably
I would look forward to a thread though for ideas

With some additional thought,
A battery, starter motor with bendix, simple welded or even bolted angle iron frame, a couple pipe rolls, sprockets and chain, perhaps old bicycle stuff, a switch to trigger it, shouldn't be too difficult. We have lots of sharp guys here.

Hi @Jim
I have not used them myself. But my local restoration specialist has mentioned them as a good and reliable source in conversation.

Never used them but I've heard of them and they get very positive reviews. Google gives them 4.7 out of 5 based on 196 reviews so they must be doing something right. They help owners keep old bikes running not just supplying parts but they fabricate bits as well.

Cheers Raymond.

They're still processing the order. I'm amazed at their shipping rates.
Not sure how they stay in business givin' away shipping an' all...

So... the steering stem nut showed up a few weeks ago. It doesn't fit. Near as I can tell it's the right part, it just don't fit.... it's about 0.010" larger in dia than the old one. Haven't said anything until I came up with a fix. I'll explain in the next day or two. Now I understand how the old one got so boogered up. I think I have a fix, but it's best explained with pics... so standby for that.

Meantime, pulled the bearings outta the front hub, bead blasted and painted. Cure for a few days and I can put the front wheel back together.... gives me time to make a stand for wheel trueing.
