The engine is sitting on my bench, tore down as far as it needs.Hey @Jim
I know you had a bit on your plate of late; I just wondered whats the latest on this project?

Good old British Midlands engineering for you……I knew a guy who sold them, back when they were new, he said it was the only motorcycle he ever sold that was already worn out when you took it out of the crate.
“Fookin’ ‘ell Eddie, this Jim fella should join our fookin’ union. His work rate could stop product development. No need to go on strike then tha’nars. The Japs have no fookin’ chance mate”. Said the Brummie engineer, in the pub dribbling into his pint, to no one listening.Well, just this week I tried... again... to take the forks apart. Again... no joy.
I'll put up a blurb about what's up, what I've tried in the next week or so.

Me too. Plus, it's a proper BSA not some Indian 'real' and 'authentic' 're-imagining' of an old classic.Hey! Nice, been looking forward to seeing some work on your BSA!
Looks like discoloured white plastic to me. But fancy pants wooden oil filler caps could be a sideline for @Jim, alongside his electrical winding & paint jobs?Me too. Plus, it's a proper BSA not some Indian 'real' and 'authentic' 're-imagining' of an old classic.
Looking forward to the inside story. BTW is that a wooden oil filler cap? You keepin' with that?
What did you use for stud spacers?A revival... of sorts?
Paintwork is down to just one tank left. Played with VanGo a bit today, then switched gears. The Big Lug's been sittin' on my bench comin' up on a year now. 'Bout time I gave it some love, what?
Made a cover to block off the case where the cylinder goes and lugged the lug (see what i did there?) out in the yard for a proper cleanin'. Used all manor of solvents, poke's and prods... wire brushes... you can't eat off it, but it's 1000% better than it was.

Tomorrow I'll do some measuring and decide if the innards are within book callouts... or it wants a complete disassembly.
Ahem... 'bout them pesky front forks... don't ask.
And come to think of it, why do we preface that with "front?" That's opposed to what... rear forks? Shouldn't we jus' call 'em... forks? Or "front" shocks? 'Cause that's all they are.
Yes it's dry sump but that's the fill plug/oil level stick for the transmission, not related to the sump. It's nylon plastic and yellows with exposure to oil.The cap is faded plastic. Since it's a dry sump engine, not even sure why it's there.
Kinda sorta thought that was the case. Thanks for confirming.Yes it's dry sump but that's the fill plug/oil level stick for the transmission, not related to the sump. It's nylon plastic and yellows with exposure to oil.
I just went back and re read this entire thread, great stuff! I had forgotten how much you’ve already done!
Btw, if you get desperate on those forks, I noticed there are 5 or 6 sets of forks currently for sale on EBay. Not sure of their condition.
