Yeah, that's what I'm thinkin'... sumpin along those lines anyway. Cut this bit of rubber down and hot glue it to these pliers.Maybe a pair of vice grips clamped around a double layer of scrap inner tube, clamped around a spoke while you tighten?

Yeah that looks nice and thick! 
Dip them in Caro syrup, drag them through the sand box(fine sand), assemble. It's in the shop manual, page 86.
I suspect that the rubber-jawed pliers will work, unless you really need to clamp the spokes hard. In that case, I would use a short piece of round (or hex) aluminum bar stock, bored the same diameter as the spoke and then slotted the length of the bore so that one could slip it over the spoke and then apply clamping pressure with a pair of locking pliers of sorts...but then again you knew that, right, Jim?

Hot glued rubber on the pliers worked a treat for holding the spokes.
Spokes tight, less than 1/16" runout... vertical and side to side, and aired to 40lbs for a leak check. Provided it's still got 40lbs in the morning, I'll balance it and set it aside 'till the brakes are done.

I am a little amused to see a fastener with a single slot for a "regular" screwdriver. Amused because I drove 100s of bronze slotted screws when I was 10 years old and my dad was building a sailboat in the garage. I have learned a lot since and phillips, JIS, hex, Torx, Robertson et al are hands down better.
Rear brakes are done. I was kinda iffy on takin' pics of the process.... oops. Managed to save all the original hardware, save for the washers. Acid bath and zinc plating turned out good. I'm happy.

Looks to me too. But I think you can just see what looks like the edge of masking tape. I guess that's now peeled off and the drum is bare metal.
Krylon high friction brake drum paint, matches their caliper paint perfectly.
