72 xs2 bogs down and backfires out of carbs, out of ideas

Now that I have the motor back in frame, I will install the advance rod and timing plates.

What type of grease does everybody like to use on their advance rod?

There'll be loads of opinions on that, I guess. I have used a lithium grease, NLGI2 or 3, with moly di-sulphide or graphite. Won't go far wrong with that.

Alright, I got her all back together and went for a test ride, timing was still off but after some panic I discovered I was 180 out and just reset the gap and plate. Starts great, the bog problem is gone but I will need to fine tune the points gap because it seems like I have slightly weak spark going from a stop then she picks right up.

Just had a similar good experience with those cheap pwk 32 and they're unexpectedly performing flawless.

Now looking to find a way how to get 6th gear, because the bike still feels like to keep going faster.

This bike has a centrifical spark advance mechanism on the end of the cam inside the points box. I had an XS-1 with a failure of that unit (they stick). If you have a strobe (timing gun) you can check to see if your spark is advancing. The stock coils are marginal at best and are probably in need of replacing along with the wires if the old stock ones are still aboard.

After weeks of trying to stop my XS from spitting back through the carbs & backfiring. When I finally conceded that I had dine everything possibly regarding carburetion. I decided that ut must be electrical. Changed the Condenser.
Problem solved!
😤😁
