I aquired an original w/title 73TX a few months back. It had been sitting out in the elements for many years.Yep, it’s stucker than stuck as would be expected.Other M/C projects have priority at this time however curiosity has been working heavily on my mind. The motor is coming out and going on my motor table stand to do a proper assessment. I’ll be adding my findings to this thread as well as other work done to this TX650 as it progresses

A worthy project begins.😁

I’m aging rapidly, slower than many here, faster than others here. Not an expert at anything. One thing I do know for a fact is;The leaves from the trees will be there for you to grind, burn, study or simply enjoy. The other fact I do know is;Mice love toilet paper even at your private relaxing spot.Sooo I finally arose to the challenge they present.3/16 steel.🤷‍♂️

Motor is removed now.Having an overhead winch hoist makes pulling thumpers and twins a usually smooth task. After everything is removed and unbolted I drain the oil, unquestionably remove the starter, choke a v-belt midway around the cylinder to the right. As the cable tightens and some guiding I’m able to slowly roll the table cart sideways to the left and it’s out.(Yep I’m old enough to have done all this out on a tree limb with any long enough chunk of chain or cable we could salvage, cobble together to make work, and many of us somehow survived.)Dismantling the front end next.Blasting, priming and painting the soon to be bare frame over the holiday weekend.Brass swingarm bushings, tapered front neck bearings and a grease fitting will be installed after the frame gets back on the table cart.

I was able to get the frame blasted this afternoon after work.Normally I have the swingarm removed for blasting.Evening rain was on its way and like many times the swingarm mounting shaft was being stubborn so I did it with it on.Sprayed a coat of cover primer so it’s not bare while I finish getting it prepped for painting. I always save the tags and don’t blast them off. Before Gorrila tape I would use 2 layers of good duct tape and cover the tag 1/4-1/2” beyond the sticker tag area.Now,1 layer of Gorrila tape works fine.Painting it soon. I no longer keep continuous heat in the shop area when I’m not out there so I’m focused on getting it painted and in the house/basement constant heat until Christmas/New Years time off.

I left the heat on in the side room overnight to let the frame dry so it can go to the basement for a while.Spent the day getting some better organization and a good look at everything.Moved the motor to a table stand for when I’m ready to tackle that task. I was trying to recall when and where I bought this particular motor stand. I believe it was early days of E-bay. The swivel capability been a been a big advantage.Part of the enjoyment of working on old M/C’s for me has always been making jigs or tools to fit the needs of the moment or future needs but this type stand has proven quite a good purchase to say the least. The upcoming plans are to bring the frame back out over the year end holidays and back on the table cart.Swing arm brass bearings and tapered neck roller bearings and a grease fitting first.Rebuild and beautify forks.Order spokes and rework both wheels and some polishing and painting of small parts from time to time.Realistically planning this will take this winters spare time to get done.

Some quality time with you and the young lad. Nice. Have fun.
My oldest son is now 25, and a rider with his own bike. Soon we will be rebuilding carbs together. My 650 will be his one day.
My grandson now almost 10.He’s been all about hanging with grandps in the shop but the times are getting fewer and shorter together out here as he matures so I grasp every opportunity while I can.👍😁

It will be some time away before I get to the motor rebuilding but I popped the top to get a gander.Yep,it’s stucker then stuck.😂. I had no doubt it’ll need some major love when it followed me home so not disappointed a bit.👍
