I just put a new clutch cable on my 77 xs650. now when i got to put it in gear, it lurches then stalls. what am i doing wrong? can someone please tell me the easiest way to adjust it? Thanks.

Sounds like the clutch is not fully disengaging and you need to take up a little slack on the cable. Loosen the adjuster at the handlebar then adjust the bottom locknut and screw (loosen locknut, lightly seat screw[if you use much effort you will be disengaging the clutch and it will slip], tighten locknut) before taking up any cable slack with the bar adjuster. Sometimes takes a bit of experimentation to get a good setting.

Boy howdy. I liked to thought I was never gonna get my clutch dialed in on my '81. For me, it turned out that the most important adjustment was up at the clutch lever. I wound up setting it so there was less freeplay than normal -- maybe 1/8" -- but that completely cured the problem I was having. And I was having the same problem -- the clutch not fully disengaging.

Having the adjustment set properly down on the engine case is important too, but it seems to be the adjustment that everybody expects to cure the problem, and then the lever adjustment gets overlooked.

Key is to adjust on the LH case first and then on the lever. It can be pretty tricky to get just right and mine goes out of adjustment like every 150 miles. If I ever have to battle to find neutral I just do the whole process and works like a charm!

When you do the adjustment on the LH case, screw in until you feel a little resistance then go out 1/8-1/4 of a turn. May take a couple times to get a good idea of where that resistance is aswell.

Did you happen to lose the ball from the worm gear when you pulled the cover off? That'll do it. An immediate 5/16" more free play in your lever.

The adjustment technique is an on-going argument with these bikes. I have a certain way I like to do it. I think it's good and it works for me. Others have different ideas. All I can tell you for sure is the original shop manual way usually doesn't give the best results.

Lubing the cable and adjuster worm is very important also. To little lube and the cable has to stretch more than it should. More stretch = less clutch pressure plate movement.
