78 XS650e build

Do a google search... there's millions of 'em out there.

99% of what's out there is rated well in excess of 50A

Personally, I'd try to get an original, a safety relay too. Lots of guys eliminate the electric start so there should be lots of these items around. Maybe check the "Classified" section here, or even post a "Wanted" ad there.

I feel the safety relay is a much needed part of the starter circuit. If you get a '77 or older unit, it should just be the one relay for the starter (no "auto-on" headlight relay). I don't think you even want the headlight relay. I did away with it on both of my 650s.

Yes sir🫔any specific links you have? You seem to be the master of hard to find websites with a goldmine inventory

Here is a tip.

Get a part # to use in a search

Use partzilla or any other Yamaha parts supplier or down load a parts manual from

https://thexscafedotcom.wordpress.com/
Scroll down the left side till you get to manuals

https://biker.net/
Again scroll down left hand side

https://www.xs650.com/threads/xs650...-other-information-including-xs750-850.30569/
Not just an ID thread. Links to tutorials and common information for those things needed to fix for rebuilds

But, have you checked to see if you still even have a starter motor installed in the bike? Some guys remove them when going kick only.

I have not yet, currently we’re working on the gas tank and carb cleaning. Its getting dark here in rockies so i’ll have to check this weekend and update you/ye’all.

A god send you are sir!!🫔 Exactly the type of stuff I'm looking for. Ill start my search's and find what I need

A simple look at the bottom of the motor will tell you if the starter motor is still installed. If it is, it will be plainly visible behind the rear oil drain plug ......

Yes sir🫔 Ill give her a check tonight and see what's there. It seems simple enough to replace if it does seem to be missing

So it seems I do not have the starter motor.__. Now this isn’t EXACTLYYYYY a problem, I don’t mind having a kick start only, actually its kinda preferred but with the Dyna III being present (and seems to be one of the better ignitions available at the time) it seems like a waste to not have an electric start.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I can no longer muster more than a couple of kicks these days, so for me a functioning electric start is essential. If you are thinking of refitting an electric start, next thing I would do is to check that the starter cross shaft and gears are still in place. Sometimes they're removed on a kick start only motor. It would be a big job to refit electric start if the cross shaft has been removed from the engine.

Part number 10 and associated other parts, gears etc -

Upon sleeping on it and mentally rationalizing I’ve decided that no I will not be reinstalling the electric start. In my young spry youth I’m sure the kick will benefit the health(or kill my legs earlier in lifešŸ˜‚) so ill stick with just that. Plus weight loss=speed😌

I’m liking the look of the simplified wiring diagrams makes everything light and compact. Might be a obvious answer but to the left of the coils in the diagram, Im correct in guessing thats the ignition module(normally points but now electric)?

That's a simple diagram for a bike with a PMA system. The bit I think you're referring to on that diagram is the rectifier/regulator.

I do plan on buying the PMA kit from TCbros thats comes with the regulator rectifier, everything I’ve read tells me it'll work just fine with my dyna.

What is wrong with the charging system on the bike??

Admittedly I haven’t gotten into the actual alternator but the rectifier and regulator unit are old and crusty and the simplicity of the combined unit is nice, additionally it would be nice to switch to a capacitor to save weight
