82 Xs650 Special Float height? Info :)

Typically carbs only need synched when you separate them from each other (mostly). I think save the $70 - you'll spend it elsewhere. If you just remove carbs (as a pair) to change jets - do not typically need synched.

How often do carbs need to be synced?
The XS 650 SF/2F OWNER'S MANUAL sitting in front of me says to do it every 5,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. YMMV

I read that wrong, it says every six months or 2,500 miles. I'm wondering how many people keep that schedule. As JP indicated, I do it any time I have the carburetors off.

Hello all! I'm hoping to find time tomorrow to at least start this work of properly putting my 650 back together. I've been very busy with home repair... My sewage stack pipe is leaking. I've got some time before the contractor comes in to help me put things back together right. So I plan to be back in the saddle by the weekend!

Recap: you experienced sudden loss of power and removed carbs and reassembled, yet to install angle bracket and to connecting bracket needed reinstalled with big gap at the rear.

Ready to clean points, set gap and adjust timing? (posts 31 & post 40 w/attachment)

Synch; once you've done it and checked with gauges a few times you can visually sync with high accuracy when the carbs are off.

Hiya! Getting to it now. And I goofed. I did not anticipate the home repairs so I did t take photos of the 650. Opps! Do the carbs go back on before the points, gapping and timing?

Well yes, you really need to be able to run the bike for setting the timing using a timing light. You can initially static time it to get it close but then it should be checked while running with a timing light to set the timing exactly.

These look right? Can I do these before I put the carbs back? And sorry but i'se completely ig'nant on this. Where exactly are the points? jpdevol told me to sandaper them... How and where exactly?

Close....I'd suggest repositioning the points' wire terminals as below to prevent interference with the movement

So the cleaning (points file, fine sandpaper, and contact cleaner) occurs between the contact points - one fixed, one spring loaded for R & L cylinders.

Then the gap is adjusted by loosening the small x-head screw and rotating the individual points backing plates

Thanks!
Ist question : how do I reposition the terminals?
2nd: where are the contact points?

Maybe you could mark up the photo?
