Adopting another problem child

I also noticed one of the rear wheel bearings just didn’t feel really smooth so I ordered a set just for cheap insurance..

Got the tires and wheels done and I noticed something that was happening with the Shinko’s. It happened on the front wheel on Patience and caused a little concern. the bead just doesn’t want to pop completely on no matter how much soap and pressure. It finally did on the aforementioned front wheel but it took a minute and made me think there was an issue with my balance and truing job. I put 90 psi on it and it’s slowly moving but if it continues to be an issue with these tires I may just switch brands. I’ve been using them for years and have only had this problem my last two experiences but it shouldn’t be this hard to get it to seat. 1EE7029B-C0AD-46FD-954D-058D4D9373C9.jpeg036D7BBA-C46D-4CC3-97BB-067F36E0F894.jpeg

Maybe you should try some real tire lube? .....

For years I used soapy water too simply because all the tire lubes I saw were quite expensive. Then I found this stuff, a few years ago it only cost me about $15 for a whole gallon. I didn't mind buying that much because as you can see in the link, it can be used for more than just changing tires. I even sprung for the applicator brush, lol .....

I actually had that thought and considered using some wire pulling lube I have, maybe even some Vaseline…lol(jk)

I unpacked my latest parts order and realized I ordered the carb boots with the vacuum barb. The metal shrouds won’t fit over them so I either delete them or cut the barb off and fill the hole. Anyone had to do this?

Why does it seem like the cleaning is endless lol. I have a perfectly good part, grab the bag of hardware and UGH! It’s either still grimy or rusty from when I pulled everything apart. I should know that by now. I have the bars and controls practically soaking in penetrant because they are frozen and I tried the screws but don’t want to snap them off. My plan was to use the bars and controls off the TX500 as the controls are the same except for the right side not being run through the bars and the throttle being different. 191A963F-CCB6-4FC6-9722-5D5EA2C19D50.jpegThe bars themselves are just a slight bit different but not extreme. I sat on the bike with them installed and it didn’t feel bad. I managed to get the front wheel on, bars and gauges installed and she’s looking like a bike.27370DB1-281F-4EF5-887F-5320C1F7D975.jpeg9D929A73-EE2D-4308-B7AE-A8F578F74902.jpeg6B678226-4CB6-4EE2-83EB-E5FD3346E815.jpeg

If you plan on using the original carbs then you will have to use the original right switch/throttle housing. The carbs use two throttle cables and the original twist grip housing is made to take two. Depending on the year of the XS500, it may not be a two cable twist grip.

It is a dual throttle set-up, that’s why I’m using it. There is a difference in the cable hook-up at the throttle but that shouldn’t be a huge issue. The TX cables have threaded ends vs being held in with a clip. Another thing I ran across was I planned on using the rectifier off the TX as those are the same but there is a difference in the plug ends. either I893300BA-CFCD-42F1-80CF-ECF60E313C8E.jpeg1A491081-0106-44CA-8B8E-379AEED0DD22.jpeg change the ends or I use the Windy Nation set-up as outlined in the reg/rec thread.

Marty the tiny bit of rust inside there will wipe out. The outside is a pretty Yamaha purple. That bucket will make an excellent spare or trade bait…… I see why they get so rusty. That’s basically bare metal with the outside paint overspray on it.

While I’m at a small lull while I wait on a couple orders I started looking at this gas gauge cap. I should be able to get into the back to replace the bathstopper chain I’ll just have to be careful as the back was as rusty as the tank so I don’t want to mess up the screws or break one off. I’m also considering options to replace the glass face.3964C95B-596D-4727-AA36-CF40AC07731A.jpegEBFE7740-78AE-4D13-AF97-480AC9F7714F.jpeg

Ok, weekends over time to start thinking about things again. Next major issue to deal with is Carbs. I’ll know more about things when I open them up but are the holes in the choke cover gasket the only thing different between the 74-75 and 76-77 kits?
