Artemis II

Looks like Elon gets to keep pretty much the whole basket...

That's true of SpaceX and any other contractors also?
With Elon's design strategy it's prolly even more so cuz he prioritizes equipment designed and used by other industries.
And around 10% of NASA' s budget goes to SpaceX.

Not taking away from innovation of some of SpaceX's, (now AI SpaceX), cost saving measures. Reusing stages and all.

An interesting comment in a recent interview of Sir Peter Beck, (rocket lab), when asked how he manages to develop his space program so well.
He said, Paraphrasing here.

As an engineer if I was running the company I would never get past the testing stage,
As an entrepreneur I would b in such a hurry I would b blowing everything up and go broke.
To find the balance of an engineer's quest for perfection and an entrepreneurs need for results, I am fighting the 2 all the time to find the right balance between the 2 to b safe and progress.

Just a few of the numerous things brought to society through the space program.
without getting into the unmentionables learned that we will never learn about...

remember when non stick frypans were first bought onto the market. Hailed as a breakthrough technology developed through the space program.

We now know the long term affects of this.

But yes, space programs have advanced society in may ways

Well they made it back safely. As we all already know.

A lot of the comments from Faceglob and blusky were how this space flight made people interested in the space program, proud of NASA and got the whole family into it.

Made people forget, or tune out the negativity of the middle east. The coming together of different nations, seeing the diversity in the crew, just gave people a glimpse of what can b achieved when we work together, don't think I read a negative post, or if I did they were so few they got lost in the positivity of the many.

Another common theme was how privateers are not inspiring. People seemed to get sick of SpaceX blowing up rockets so regularly.

Thinking back to the Apollo program, it seemed like everybody all over the world got swept along by the adventure. That 'Earthrise' photo from Apollo 8, surely about the most famous photo ever took, the first time humanity had a chance to see our planet in its entirity, a beautiful blue globe hanging in vast space.

People said the objective was to make discoveries on the Moon but in fact we 'discovered' the Earth.

Twenty first century? I have a feeling the motivation is to get boots on the surface before the Chinese so the USA can claim the mineral rights or whatever else might have future commercial or strategic value.

I was in the first year of highschool, had to travel Stratford, the next town, 7 mile away by buss. Had the radio on listening to the fist man land on the moon.

Yea a different time. A good thing to have the Chinese doing the moon thing to create competition.

Have been listening to a couple of interviews with Rocket lab founder Sir Peter Beck recently. I didn't realise just how much they have contributed to NASA programs with electronics.
Worked on the James Web telescope, the moon lander and building the electronics for a mars orbiter to boost signals back to earth. A side project they are working on in their spare time is a Venus probe that will last 200 seconds collecting data as it travels through the top atmosphere.... They are looking to see if they can detect life forms.
