Ok time to hit forum since I am out of ideas…
After doing top end found a rough running issue with advance rod dry (thank you everyone for tips). Got it turning very smooth, snaps back into position. Put together and rechecked static timing which was perfect.
The carbs had new rebuild kit put in which I cleaned and kept my original jets in (running shorty mufflers and pods). Took bike for quick 2 mile trip and was getting a hesitation and backfiring around 2-2.5k rpms. Above 3k bike felt good, pulls hard. Turned out pilot screw another 1/2 turn thinking that would clear my issue up.
Took bike 10 miles to get inspected and still some noticeable backfiring but hesitation not bad. Another 1/2 turn at dealer for ride home and noticed more backfiring and while running at steady 3.5k rpm getting occasional backfire.
Pulled float bowls, cleaned jets, pulled pilot jets, cleaned and readjusted to 5 turns out (prior to rebuild I was at 4). Checked carb boots for being loose, they were tight and fully seated. Floats felt good (where measured and adjusted for height during rebuild).
Bike running lean and backfiring since top end. All carb adjustments and sizes kept same with original parts (running great when did top end). Same pods, mufflers, etc. Replaced timing chain, guides, cam bearings, gaskets and updated to the Heiden (spelling?) case vent which were only changes.
Currently it idles excellent, has top end power, plugs white and out of things to check why it would be running so lean now which is what I am thinking is reason for backfiring?
Forgot to mention, 4 turns out prior to rebuild on pilot screw and when I just checked carbs after returning from dealer they were 9 turns out and not feeling like doing any difference.
