Bad noise on road trip. XS650SH

First things first, check the cam chain adjustment.
Are you still at home?
I’m at Perryville, Mo

I lost a dome nut. I had to run to tractor supply. I’m having a coffee, then I’ll check the chain. I adjusted it before I left, so I’ll know for sure as soon as I look at it.

How many miles on it? Is this the one you topped when it was using oil at the Stekoah rally?

Screwdriver/stethoscope to try and locate source of the noise?
No. This bike had 6,000 miles when I got it but it was a pile of parts. It was a father/daughter project. She moved on. https://www.xs650.com/threads/reunited-with-xs650sh.63667/ I never opened the engine. It now has a little over 14,000 miles.

@Raymond, I think I may have a couple of things going on. There’s a ringing knock that sounds like cam chain guide. There’s also a noise that sounds like gravel in the engine. The latter noise abruptly starts and stops. I can hear it come on and off at speed up to 50 mph. I think it sounds like the countershaft bearing, but that’s only because I just found the 36 mm nut loose and subsequently torqued it to 90 ft lbs then hit the road.

Right before departure I replaced rear tire, engine oil, generator brushes and tq’d that nut. I fully expected nothing could go wrong.

The former “tar baby” would likely have been the better choice.
