I don’t see damage anywhere on the bottom end. Tearing it down tomorrow
did the crank spin true?

Yes. No wobble at all. I’m starting to suspect something happened in the top end. It will be off tomorrow.
When I got the noise, I could feel it.
We’re waiting…..

The short story is, I can’t find anything wrong.
Crank bearings are fine. Crankshaft runs true on blocks.
Camshaft and rockers are fine. Just one of the cam bearings is a bit worn.
Piston and rings are in great shape.
Transmission gears and bearings are fine.
No pieces of metal anywhere.
I’m open to suggestions.

Just that the crankcase under the rods looks like something black is getting slung. Is that stuff gritty?

I’m thinking that really sounded like a bearing going out. Possibly the worn cam bearing you mentioned?
It is an obvious investigation to do .spinning and listening .feeling if it sticks and so
I have had them wear out .
One can Cut open with an angle grinder look. Since it wont be used anyways.
The crank can be difficult to check .It can spin fine a while and then stick at other
